There aren’t any official guarantees when it comes to recovering from a great party, but here are some pointers that could ensure your holiday festivities continue through the next day.
This holiday season, don't get dubbed the 'light weight'. Feel refreshed and ready to go to the next house hopping fest with our tried and tested hangover cure advice.
Pregame the Party
Maybe you want to look extra-slender in your little black dress, or maybe you’re saving your calories for the evening affair. Whatever the reason, skipping dinner is a sure-fire way to ensure you’ll be prematurely drunk, and/or prematurely sick before the night is over. Make sure you eat a well-balanced meal with complex carbs, proteins and lots of green veggies before you start on the boozing.
More sugar in your system without the healthy stuff means that the alcohol will take longer to break down. You'll likely be feeling drunk, even hung over for longer, while your body takes the time to break down these more immediate simple sugars.
Hair of the Dog
While there’s no proof that this saying is true, some people swear by it. For those looking for an end to the evening pick-me-up, try the Corpse Reviver or Corpse Reviver #2. If gin and absinthe aren’t your speed, try a Bloody Mary in the morning or a Black Velvet.
Good Old H20
As soon as you get home or as soon as you’ve had enough to drink, grab the water bottle and start drinking away. Large doeses of alcohol will leave you dehydrated, with a major headache by morning. Your motto should be “Work Hard, Party Hard, Play Harder.” With enough water detoxing your system and a good night of rest, you’ll be able to take that morning jog and burn off the calories of last night’s binge session without a problem.
Take Your Medicine
Right before you hit the hay, down two aspirins or tyenols with water. The acetaminophen and NSAIDs should help combat the upcoming morning migraine while you sleep.
Cup O’ Joe
Coffee: if you weren’t a fan before, you may become one after you see how fast you revive with a cup. The caffeine in coffee acts as a vasodilator, expanding capillaries, veins, and arteries, which allows more blood to pass through your brain to ease the ache. Substitutes include caffeinated tea and energy drinks, but for some reason it’s the coffee that people find most effective. People who suffer consistently from migraines also depend on coffee.
Vitamin Fixer-Upper
Hemmingway, a legendary alcoholic, managed to wake up in the morning after a night of heavy drinking, take his cure, and start his day. His secret? tomato juice and flat beer. We recommend you skip the beer and substitute with a chewable carbohydrate instead, but definitely keep the tomato juice (or maybe try a more appetizing V8), which is rich in necessary vitamins and minerals.
If you’re really brave, some people believe a Prairie Oyster (Image on left) will help. But, we recommend that you have your eggs; add worcestershire and tabasco sauce to the soft-boiled instead of drinking them raw, because nobody wants an attack of Salmonella.
Drink in Moderation
This is seriously the easiest thing you can do: drink within your limits. If you have to ask yourself if that next glass is too much, then it probably is. If you plan to drink a lot, then do so slowly. Drink every hour to give your body enough time to metabolize the alcohol. Don't forget you're a grown-up so don’t be that guy or girl that needs babysitting and ruins the party for someone else.
Tip: If you’re worried that people will try to push drinks on you, grab a non-alcoholic camouflage drink or a mocktail. No one needs to know that your Vodka & Coke is 100% Coca Cola, or that your Appletini is just juice and simple syrup. If it suits you, volunteer at the beginning of the night to be the designated driver. The responsibility of caring for the safety of others will cause you to think twice about binge drinking.
