Meditate to reconnect with what matters, says Deepak Chopra.
Few initiatives light up people’s interests — irrespective of their backgrounds — with as much intensity as does the quest for a meaningful life that’s well lived. Naturally then, when the new-age spiritual guru and founder of The Chopra Centre, Deepak Chopra, offered a free online meditation summit, it was no wonder that it piqued the interest of more than half a million people from across the world.

Known as the Global Meditation for Compassion, the day-long event held recently in Carlsbad, California was hosted by Chopra along with Gabrielle Bernstein, founder of the social networking site HerFuture.com, and Ismael Cala, anchor of CNN en Español. The event also featured several special guests including a live performance by singer-songwriter Trevor Hall.

Attendees got to join an in-person conversation on compassion and experienced a guided meditation led by Chopra. In addition to this, the Chopra Centre streamed the 90-minute program live for the half a million of participants joining from all over the world to virtually engage in the global event.
So, what was the objective? According to the Chopra Centre’s website, it’s to change the world with compassion, one person at a time and to turn around the rising tide of disconnection in the world through renewed empathy and love so people can reconnect with what truly matters.

According to Chopra, there’s a creative solution needed to deal with the world we live in — a world that suffers from war, violence, poverty and several other such chronic ailments. He says this has desensitized and isolated most people, giving rise to a “me first” attitude. The Global Meditation for Compassion is his effort to remind people that we are all one.
“My dream is to reach a critical mass or tipping point of people who want to create a more peaceful, just, sustainable, healthier and happier world,” Chopra says. “By coming together with hundreds of thousands of people from around the world to meditate and focus our attention on compassion, we are contributing to that critical mass and the collective transformation of the planet.”

This is the second year of the Global Meditation for Compassion initiative. The first instalment, held last year, set a Guinness World Record for being the largest online meditation gathering ever with some 140,000 participants from most countries all over the world. This year, the event turned out to be even bigger hitting another record with more than 500,000 people enrolling in the experience online.

“Meditation is one of the most powerful tools for expanding our awareness, both individually and collectively. The more people expand their awareness, the more we can change society for the better,” Chopra says. “If people come to the event or join us via live streaming, they will experience the potential within themselves to not only make a difference in their own lives, but to help transform the world.”
