How to Recreate the Stars' Stunning Red Carpet Looks at the Prestigious Film Festival
The 2015 Cannes Film Festival is underway and all eyes are on the red carpet. As the newest ambassador of L’Oreal Paris (India), Bollywood bombshell Katrina Kaif made her debut at this year’s festival, showcasing two very different beauty looks.
Day One: Vintage Glam
For her first Cannes red carpet, Katrina Kaif channelled old-world Hollywood glamour for her hair and makeup. For starters, it was hard not to notice the dramatic new hair colour — a deep burgundy with red highlights. It’s definitely a change from her usual black hair, but for me, what really stood out was the way it was styled: a vintage-inspired wave swept to one side with a deep side parting. (Think Veronica Lake.)
This is probably one of the easiest styles to recreate. Start by parting the hair to one side. You’ll be working in small sections, but hairspray the pieces from a distance before curling. While keeping the curling iron parallel to your parting, wrap the top of a small section (about an inch from the root) around the barrel only once. Hold it in place for a few seconds before wrapping the rest of the section. Hold for another 20 seconds and then gently unwind the curl. Try to make each curl as identical as possible.
Once the hair is all curled, comb the hair forward from underneath to pull apart the curls; they’ll start to meld into one big wave. Use your fingers (add a few spritzes of hairspray) to mold it into shape and smooth down the top. To add an extra sheen, finish with a light spritz of Chi Spotlight Shine Spray.
Katrina's glamorous hair was complemented with dramatic smoky eye makeup. Start with thicker black liner on the top lid and charcoal grey shadow that’s darker on the outside but gradually fades into a neutral cream shade on the inner corner of the eye. (The perfect trio palette for this is Marc Jacobs' Beauty Style Eye-Con Icon No. 3 Plush Eyeshadow in The Seductress.) Use a black pencil liner or kajal along the lower lash line. For a little extra drama, add a small set of fake lashes on just the outer corners. To perfect the look, use an angled brush and bronzer to contour and define cheekbones, and stick to a nude lip colour or even just a sheer lip gloss, like Giorgio Armani Flash Lacquer in shade 106.
Day 2: Lady In Red
The undertones of Katrina Kaif’s second red carpet look were simple and sophisticated. Since her hair was just straight, the focal point was the red lips that matched her scarlet Elie Saab gown perfectly. When using a heavily pigmented lip shade like this one, use a lip liner first to not only outline but also fill in your whole lip (the drier texture adheres to lips better.) I usually use Make Up Forever Waterproof Lip Liner Pencil because it goes on easily and doesn't fade. After applying the lipstick, lay a single ply of Kleenex overtop and use a brush to gently dab on some face powder, which will set the lipstick and help prevent smudging. When it comes to picking a lipstick colour, the Givenchy Le Rouge lipstick collection has a wide range of shades for every skin tone — from a lighter pinkish red (shade 301 Magnolia Organza) to a deeper crimson colour (shade 307 Grenat Initié).
The trick to keeping this look sophisticated is to avoid overdoing the rest of the face. For the eyes, keep it simple with a thin stroke of black liner along the top lash line, brown pencil liner inside the lower lash line (it's subtler than black) and a touch of mascara on the top and bottom lashes. Then just add a natural flush of colour on the cheeks — try Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Colour in Honey Mocha or Rose Bloom.
