Secret in Their Eyes (Now playing, STX Entertainment)
Billy Ray may not be the most recognizable name in the directory of Hollywood film directors, but he has very quietly been responsible for two of the new millenium’s very best thrillers — 2003's Shattered Glass and 2007's Breach. In the process, he’s established a singular slow-burn style that marks him as one of the business’s true auteurs.
This month, he’s looking to go three-for-three with this harrowing drama. Julia Roberts and 12 Years a Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor play a pair of FBI agents named Jess and Ray whose partnership swiftly unravels when they stumble upon the murder of Jess’s teen daughter — a crime which goes unsolved. Thirteen years later, however, a break in the case brings them back together, and puts Jess on the path to vengeance.
Victor Frankenstein (November 25, Fox)

Daniel Radcliffe continues charting a commendably offbeat post-Hogwarts career path with this stylish reimagining of the classic Mary Shelley shocker. Here he plays the Igor to James McAvoy’s titular mad scientist, and it’s from his perspective that we witness the rise of the Dr. Frankenstein, as the two unlikely friends scrounge up body parts and defy the laws of nature to realize Frankenstein’s ill-fated vision of giving life to the dead.
The Danish Girl (November 27, Limited, Focus Features)
A searingly raw Eddie Redmayne makes a strong bid for back-to-back Best Actor Oscars in Tom Hooper's gorgeously shot biopic of Einar Wegener, a Dutch painter who, in the 1920s, became an early transgender pioneer and the first-ever man to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. Best Actress contender Alicia Vikander delivers an equally memorable performance as Einar’s wife, Gerda, who struggles to support her husband’s painful emotional and eventually physical transformation, even as she feels the man she loves slipping away.

Teenager Max (American Horror Story's Taissa Farmiga) is still grieving the death of her mother (Malin Akerman) — a former scream queen — when she’s cajoled by her best friend’s nerdy brother (scene-stealer Thomas Middleditch of HBO's Silicon Valley) into being the guest of honour at a showing of one of mom’s old movies.
But right as the clothes start to drop and the blood starts to flow onscreen, Max and her friends find themselves sucked into the film itself and must band together with mom and the flick’s other amusingly clueless characters to survive not only the hulking killer, but the clichés that make surviving such a film nearly impossible.
The Stanford Prison Experiment (Now available, IFC)

In 1971, Stanford psychology professor Philip Zimbardo (Billy Crudup) conducted one of the most infamous experiments in human behaviour to date. Setting up a makeshift prison in the psych department’s basement, he selected 24 male students (played by Hollywood up-and-comers Tye Sheridan, Michael Angarano and Ezra Miller), divided them up into prisoners and guards, and gave the latter complete control of the former. In less than a week, Zimbardo and his subject learns some hard lessons about humanity's capacity for cruelty.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (Now available, Warner Brothers)

Dying a quick death at the box office, this sleek throwback spy romp is worth a second look on home video. Based on the 1960s TV series, the film follows suave CIA man Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and hulking Russian spook Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer), who must begrudgingly team up when a rogue syndicate starts stockpiling enough nukes to obliterate both sides of the Cold War. Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie injects the film his trademark kinetic energy, which, coupled with the sparkling chemistry between Cavill, Hammer and female lead Alicia Vikander, makes for some infectiously fun (albeit insubstantial) spy games.
