Revamp Your Manicure with this Season’s Most Wearable Nail Trends
I’ll be the first one to admit that not all beauty looks translate seamlessly from the catwalk to city streets. But these five nail trends from the spring 2015 ready-to-wear runways are the perfect accessory to complete any look, no matter what skin tone you have.
Playing with White
I’ve always loved the look of clean, white polish, but I’ve felt that it sometimes looks messy and just too flashy against darker skin tones like mine. A good way to use white without it looking gaudy against South Asian skin is to try creative techniques that break up the colour a bit. For instance, Bibhu Mohapatra did white linear nail art over a nude nail and just on the four fingers (the thumb had contrasting black nail art.) Wes Gordon also used subtle white nail art over a nude nail. You’d even be amazed how much a single line on an all-white nail can soften the look. Erin Fetherston did a silver horizontal line along the top and Misha Nonoo did an unpainted vertical stripe down the middle of the nail.
Negative Space
If you have darker skin tones and are self-conscious about wearing really bright, punchy polishes, this is another great manicure trick that was seen a lot on the spring runways this season. The trick is to leave some unpolished spaces where your bare nail peeks through. Charlotte Ronson used a mint green shade — on some fingers there was polish just on the half-moon shape above the cuticle, and other fingers had the reverse (polish everywhere except the half-moon.) Delpozo achieved a very similar effect but with coral nail polish.
Reliable Red
Red's the one polish colour that complements light, medium and dark skin tones, which is why red has always been my top pick when my nails are in need of a quick facelift. So you can imagine my satisfaction when I saw that a lot of top designers, including Zac Posen, Jenny Packham and Carolina Herrera, still relied on the timeless nail trend to round out their spring collections.
Seeing Green
You probably don’t usually think of deep green or turquoise for spring, but against medium and dark skin, it really pops without being too over-the-top. In fact, for the Karen Walker show, deep teal was the nail lacquer of choice because it actually complemented the collection’s garden theme.
Embellishments
Betsey Johnson wins my award for best-dressed nails of the 2015 spring season. Models flaunted the modern bridal collection with metallic grey nails adorned with 3D pearls and crystals. Clearly, you don’t need a ring to sport some bling (cheesy, I know!). Honor did something similar but with small pearls on top of bright blue nails. The extra trimmings really make nails stand out and you can use any colour as the base. Doing all ten nails might be a little too over-the-top for everyday wear, but even just doing one finger on each hand adds a nice touch.
