Toronto-based stand-up comedian, Danish Anwar takes hyphenated introductions to a whole new level. Born and raised in Moscow, he prides himself of being the worlds first and only Soviet-Born Indian-Bengali-Canadian-Comic.
A successful producer known for trendsetting ideas & a reputation for exceeding seating capacity wherever he goes, hes also the founder of the wildly popular comedy label Toronto Comedy All Stars.
Drawing from his extensive global travels & an “unhealthy” obsession with politics, Danish Anwars material is often described as smart, political & really, really funny, sometimes without air quotes. A comedian with impressive range, hes just as funny with his material as he is improvising off the cuff, moving effortlessly from heavy topics like gender equality and racial discrimination to relationships and impersonating black people on the internet.
He was a finalist in the 2011 edition of the Toronto Comedy Brawl, an annual event contested by hundreds of comedians in Toronto.
In 2012 he was nominated for the Tim Sims Encouragement Award as one of Canadas best new comedic prospects by The Second City, was a finalist in JFL42s Funniest Torontonian search, and was nominated by his peers for Producer Of The Year in the Toronto comedy scenes annual I Heart Jokes Awards
In 2013, he was one of 7 Canadians invited to the World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas, an event featuring 101 of North Americas best standup comics.
In 2014 he created Your Hoods A Joke – a radical comedy show that took Toronto by storm & grabbed the national medias attention which features every month at Comedy Bar (voted #1 comedy club in Toronto for the last 4 years).
In 2015 he was invited to performed at the CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival Gala, taping a TV set in front of 1800 people.
Hes currently part of Yuk Yuks Fast Track roster, a shortlist of emerging comedians on the verge of being added to their permanent roster.
I had the opportunity to sit and chat with Danish on the eve of his win at ANKHI MEDIA’s 12th anniversary event in Toronto at the end of March. Check out what he had to say about being one of the few South Asian comedians in Canada to work full-time in comedy.
ENJOY!
