Since most fruits and vegetables are available to us all year round, we often overlook the healthy component to please our taste buds instead. We tend to ignore the importance of nutritional value and freshness, choosing what is conveniently obtainable instead. This winter, take a close look at the types of food you should be eating in the season.
Did you know that some fruits and vegetables have thermal properties? That they can warm your body from inside hence called 'warming foods'. Thousands of years ago the Chinese and East Indian cultures developed classification systems for the foods they ate.

Oriental medicine highlights warming foods as those that take longer to grow. Root vegetables such as carrots and most cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage are good winter choices.
Apart from seasonal foods, we also need to eat food that keeps our body temperature in check and protects us from the chilly weather. Exercising, layers of clothing, hot drinks and delicacies keep a check on the exterior of our bodies in the cold. For the interior of our body, however, we should eat food products that have a warming effect intrinsically.
Warming foods also include herbs and spices such as Anise, Basil, Cumin, Cinnamon, Cloves and Coriander, along with Garlic, Ginger, Nuts, Onions, different kinds of Pepper, Tea, Scallions and Seeds, among others.
Cayenne pepper, ginger, garlic and black pepper are all examples of ingredients that can warm you from within. Use them in beverages as well as meals and keep your internal fire stoked. Warm beverages are a great way to satisfy a sweet craving as well as give the body some spice.
Eating the right kinds of food during the colder months will ensure your body-temperature remains balanced in the cold. It also strengthens the immune system so that it is well-equipped to beat the chill.
It is no wonder then that local produce and seasonal foods are now increasingly advocated by health organizations. Apples, Clementine, Cranberries, Figs, Brussels sprouts, Turnips, Squash and Beets are some of the fall fruits and vegetables you might want to add to your shopping cart this season. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are not only healthier, cheaper, but also have a better taste as they are harvested at the right time. They also reach us sooner after harvest than shipped foods.
While you pay attention to convenience, make sure your health and body don’t suffer in the process. So eat right this winter and let these tips help you treat yourself to a better, healthier winter season.
