India's Contribution Towards A Greener Planet
As we celebrate Earth Day today, we're reminded to think twice about actions that could harm our local environment as well as the globe. Taking steps to help build a greener world, we take part in community initiatives and implement new procedures at home for a more structured green lifestyle, but what about our sister countries and, in particular, the motherland?
Earth Day Network’s (EDN) India Program, which is based in Kolkata, has been tirelessly working with partners to build and grow a leading environmental movement.
Women's Empowerment
Earth Day Network is creating a platform of women leaders in India to join a global network and help promote their role in defining and designing a green economy. Workshops take place to provide women in India with education and skill sets to earn a sustainable livelihood fit for their environment.
Green Environmental Monitors Campaign (GEMS)
GEMS aims to help what it calls the “The Climate Generation” grow to be responsible green citizens. Earth Day Network is planning to take the program to other cities in India and students across Asia too.
Greening the Concrete Jungle
With the amount of buildings in some areas — especially cities — EDN is taking the initiative to organize seminars and training programs so that citizens can learn how to grow their own plants in spaces that sorely lack greenery. EDN will also take the "build a greener neighbourhood" initiative one step further by working with municipal officials to ensure that public parks and gardens are looked after.

Planting Trees
EDN partnered with Rotary International for Green Magic, a program that aims to plant 10 million trees in India.
Educating Local Self-Government Leaders
Workshops are taking place to help women to become "agents of change" by learning how to protect and increase natural resources as well as understand the need to incorporate campaigns to move towards cleaner energies than fossil fuels.
Environmental Curriculum Development
Since that environmental studies are non-existent in the country, EDN aims to hold workshops for teachers who teach literature, history, geography, political science, art and economics to help them highlight ways to relate their subject to environmental issues.
Go Organic
With the help of retail chains and local business owners, the network has organized programs in different Indian cities to promote organic foods. Here, organic products, farmer-government meetings and awareness building are offered to the general public.
Clothes into Bags
Instead of wasteful plastic, seamstresses are converting old clothes into cloth bags for a more sustainable practice. This is just one of the many initiatives that Indians have taken to build a greener world.
Music Festival
On June 21, in honour of World Music Day, Earth Day Network-India partnered with Alliance française du Bengale for an all-day music festival to offer other events to create public awareness.
Films and Workshops
Sasha Fair Trade and EDN-India are commemorating Earth Day with a slew of exciting and fun events spread over four days from April 22 to April 25. Environmental films and workshops will start at 4:00 p.m. and visitors can pick up organic and natural produce as well as lifestyle products, skin care and hair care oils at the event — just to name a few of the offerings.
A Cleaner Country
Filth-Free India and EDN-India have been promoting awareness for a "Clean India" through good habits as well as green activities.

Waste to Paradise
Earth Day Network-India's It's Our Turn to Lead contest aims to fill deserted mining pits with mud and small stones from waste and then build a greener environment.
A Breath of Fresh Air
A recently announced World Bank–administered program will focus on air quality management in five major urban areas, including India.
It looks like Modi’s plan to “clean up” India is in full effect, wouldn’t you agree?
