What is Dream India Academy? DIA is a basketball academy created to build leaders through sport. The methodology of breaking down the science of basketball, translating that into an actionable curriculum and drills for youths is how it will operate. DIA not only uses sports as its learning mechanism, its the only platform that bridges education and basketball catered to the Indian-American community.
The academy is focused specifically but not exclusively to youths of the Indian-American community from grades 1-8. The program is set to launch in the greater suburban areas of Chicago December 2013 and then plans to go nationwide by Dec. 2014. Currently, the academy is accepting online sign-ups.
The Academy will begin in various suburbs across Chicago including, but not limited to: Oak Brook, Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Naperville, and Deerfield.
The Methodology:
Past and present basketball coaches and athletes who hold high school and/or college level education, have spent a total of two years building the Dream India Academy curriculum.
Information from nutritionists and psychologists have been combined to create a holistic program focusing on the body and mind to help create successful athletes and future leaders.
Members of the program will be required to pass specific skills testing before they are able to graduate to the next level, ensuring their mastery of soft and hard skills are learnt.
Apart from basketball, Dream India Academy will serve as a community building initiative to support the Indian youth community to interact with peers, creating life-long friendships. This will be promoted through on and off court team building exercises that focuses on strategy, execution, leadership and trust.
Why was Dream India Academy formed?
The creation of the academy was formed with the mission of using the interest of basketball to help give youths the opportunity to build important leadership skills in a sporty environment that is cohesive to their interests.
2.5 million Indian-Americans are reportedly spread throughout the U.S.., with the majority living in the suburbs of 5 metropolitan cities: Chicago, NY/NJ, LA, San Francisco, and Houston. As a fast growing, wealthy demographic, Indian youths of today's 2nd generation are looking for the same level of quality in the resources and training that their American peers have had over the years in extra curricular activities.
Dream India Academy states that they have received validation from the Indian community that their program is an attractive resource because it provides training and education along with a safe environment for where students can feel at ease in learning and improving their skill sets.
The aim is to create leaders out of athletes with strong values where they will stay connected with their community and help its stature through their successes.
"This venture is solely for the kids, to advance them through sport and build leadership skills that they are otherwise not getting. An interesting fact is that the Indian community is the fastest growing minority demographic by wealth, yet we represent the least number of top executives. The #1 reason they say this is because of the lack of the following skills: a) Teamwork and b) Trust in Leadership. We at the Academy are trying to teach these and other core principals, through the methodology we've created in basketball," says Dream Academy founder Badal Shah.
