DIY Home: Plant Lovers Unite! How To Create Your Own Terrarium
Summer is all about greens and gardening. But if you haven’t been blessed with a green thumb and a knack to keep plants alive, a terrarium is a great alternative that’s easy to create on your own.
1. Start with a clear glass bowl or jar. Look for one with added interest like the Tilt 6” Medium Bowl from Crate & Barrel ($19.95 CDN) that has an unexpected angled top.
2. Fill the bottom of the bowl with rocks to allow for water drainage. For a desi spin, choose teal stones with a bit of bling like these Ashland Glass Gems in Peacock from Michaels (12 oz, $2.99 US).
3. Add a layer of activated charcoal, which will help to keep the soil fresh. Then add your soil. You can find both charcoal and soil at your local gardening store.
4. Place your plants and their roots into the soil, keeping reasonable space between the plants, and making sure the plant leaves don’t touch the glass. Press the soil down to keep the plants in place, and add more soil on top if needed.
5. Add decorative elements in your terrarium. Here’s your opportunity to really bring in your personality. For the fashionista, try accessorizing your plants with some stand-out costume jewelry pieces like this Ruhi bracelet from Boutique De Luxe ($39 CAD).
Once you’ve assembled your terrarium, all that’s left to do is enjoy it and water it. Keep your terrarium away from direct sunlight and water it once a week, unless you have a cactus or a succulent, which only needs to be watered once a month.
