In order to get through the monotony of everyday life, it’s essential to find something you are passionate about. Here are a few ways to help you identify your passions and get you on the road to leading a more fulfilling life.
Finding your passion in life involves more than delving into a new hobby or making time for a childhood interest. It’s a way of living your life to the fullest by figuring out what makes you, YOU.
That’s why it can be such a scary endeavor to undertake. There can be barriers between you and your passions, whether it’s fear, the voice of others or your own clouded judgment from disappointments of the past. So how do you go about embarking on such a significant yet daunting journey? Heed these tips:
What Are You Constantly Gravitating Towards?
When flipping through channels on TV, which ones do you stop at?
One of the most famous Canadian astronauts, Chris Hadfield, explained how identifying your interests and what you are passionate about can be as simple as recognizing which channels you pause on while flipping through TV channels. What consumes you is the very thing that you want to know more about.
When you get free time, what do you do? What books are you drawn to? what subjects interest you most? and what threads have been recurring in your life again and again?
It's not just about finding what you were interested in as a child and trying to make a career of it. It’s about deeply and truly knowing and understanding yourself. What defines you? What sets you apart from everyone else in the world?
Tune into the things that fundamentally make you (your personality) to guide your life in the direction that best suits you.
Be Completely Honest With Yourself
Often we’re scared to admit our passions to ourselves because of fear of what others may think. Remember that we're all different and it makes absolutely no sense to judge yourself based on someone else’s idea of what it is to be happy.
You need to take a step back and really think about what it is that will fulfill your personal goals in life. This is not a one size fits all answer. Tune out what others think or say and listen to your inner voice.
If you find it hard to sift through your overactive mind to zero in on the truth, try talking things out with a personal coach or trusted friend to hone in on what your calling in life is.
We often hide certain truths even from ourselves because once we accept them, we feel we must immediatley act on them. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to act right away, just remember if you’re waiting for the perfect time, you’ll be waiting forever.
Stop Analyzing And Start DOING!
No matter how hard you try, you cannot figure out your passion by thinking about it. You need to take action.
You can achieve this in small steps if you don't feel ready for the big plunge just yet.
Familiarizing yourself with being scared and acting anyway is the best way to overcome cold feet.
You will begin to realize that you are capable of surviving a lot more than you may have thought.
Do away with the 'Yes, But' and embrace the 'Yes, And' approach.
Usually when our hearts tell us to go for something, our heads can find a reason not to. But don't forget that action is the only way to create a new habit.
Truly successful people never allow themselves to be a victim of their circumstances. You need to realize that you have the ultimate power in any situation.
Only you can make things happen in your life.
Love Everything You Do
Always remember: You are the Star of your own movie and YOU get to direct it too. So find ways to love everything you do.
At any given moment, even if you can’t change what you’re doing you can always change how you’re doing it. Seek out the things that make you happy.
Stop doing things that make you miserable. It’s as simple as that. If you notice something is not enriching your life but cannot stop doing it, find ways to make it the most enjoyable thing to do (e.g. clear the garbage in the morning when you are in a better mood, empty the dishwasher with some music on).
Also, in order to start doing the things you love, you need to make space in your life for them. This requires actually putting an end to things that don’t bring positive energy into your life.
No matter how busy you are, remember you need to make time for the things you naturally love.
Make a start today and find out who you truly are for a truly meaningful life.
Tell us which of these tips helped you the most in your journey towards self-discovery.
