It’s probably something that we all know we need to do, but always put off. When you clean your wardrobe, think of it as a bit of a detox. A wardrobe detox is a great way to free up space, as well as helping you reassess the items in your wardrobe.

Here are some tips that you can use to give your wardrobe a detox.

Survey your closet

You should start the makeover of your closet by making an inventory of all the clothes, shoes, accessories, linens and other miscellaneous times you’ve stored in your wardrobe.

Organize

Joyce Bautista of Real Simple suggests buying hanging canvas shelves. You can use them to store folded clothes that you wear all year round. This is a much cheaper solution than having custom built shelves for your home. For a reasonable price in any bulk store, you can buy organizer that you can use to store everything from woolen sweaters to shawls, saris and Indian salwar suits that you wear throughout the year or save for special occasions.

Keep your essentials

Basic and casual tops define your closet’s foundation. You need them for layering, and they work with neutral colours and all types of necklines — like V-necks or scoop necks.

You should have a few dark and light neutral-coloured camisoles that will work beautifully with fitted sweaters and fashion tops with low necklines. Tank tops also go great with cardigans and sweaters. Both long- and short-sleeve T-shirts look especially good on petites or anyone with short arms. These are super-essential and fabulous looks for those who love casual chic.

Follow the two-year rule

Donate your clothes and other miscellaneous items to a charity store to keep the flow of new and old energy moving through your closet. Use the two-year rule. This means that if you haven’t worn anything in two years, it’s time to move on and say your goodbyes to the dresses or shoes that have been in your closet forever.

These items hoard space, and you probably won’t miss them once they’re gone. You’ll feel even better once you donate them during the time of holidays.

Use all the space

Once you’ve figured out what clothes and accessories you want and need in your closet, make sure that you use the entire space in the closet — including the vertical space from floor to ceiling and the space behind the closet door, which is often wasted in large walk-in closets.
