Whether women want to talk about it or not, we all know there is an unsaid etiquette in maintaining our relationships with those we classify as our girlfriends.
Everyone knows the “Bro Code” but what is the 'Girl Code'? What are those big “do’s” and “don’ts” that girlfriends should be mindful of so we ensure we keep those loving and trustworthy women in our lives forever.
After much discussion with a number of women of various ages and life stages, I would like to introduce the top 5 cardinal rules that define the 'Girl Code'. Abide by these and avoid the pitfalls of ruining the truly meaningful relationships you have with the BFF's in your life.
1. Never date a friend’s ex or a guy she is really into.
This was hands down one of the top rules that all women agreed on. Your friend’s ex is not an option unless he has been single for a long time and you have taken the effort to consider your friend’s feelings and discussed with her the thought of pursuing her ex. I have seen too many friendships fall apart because of a guy so you and your circle of friends need to figure out the rules. Is it a free for all if you like the same guy? Does whoever yells “dibs” first get to be the one who gets the first approach? Figure it out.
2. Be trustworthy
Sometimes when I see outfits women wear, I wonder whose friends let them walk out like that? This is where I have to give cheers to my girls — they would never let me leave the house looking like a fashion victim. Tell the truth ladies!
3. Be reliable
Unless you are deathly sick, if your friend has been dumped, lost a job or even worse a family member, you have to be there. If you’re a really good friend, you’ll be there with chocolates, wine and whatever her aching heart needs.
4. Do not compete with your girlfriends
This is an important rule in all aspects of the relationship.
To solidify your friendship, understand when to reach out a helping hand to be a wing woman for your girlfriend.
If you cannot genuinely feel happy for her, then re-evaluate your friendship and start looking inside and ask yourself why that is. Real girlfriends do not compete.

5. Be the kind of friend you would like to have
When you can see yourself beyond the friendship and start reflecting on the ups and downs of your relationships with your girlfriend, ensure you act in a way that you would want your girlfriend to act towards you in similar situations.
Treasure those women that love you unconditionally and ensure you always nurture it for the long-term.
These guidelines will ensure that those that are meant to be in your life stay in your life during the good times and bad.
Note that your relationships with your girlfriends will at many times outlast your intimate relationships with men.
So nurture them with love and do not take them for granted.
