David Oyelowo Is The New James Bond . . . Sonically Speaking
David Oyelowo is the newest James Bond. But you'll only be hearing his majestic voice and flawless diction in audiobook form as he takes on the iconic spy in the newest novel, Trigger Mortis.

Approached by the Ian Fleming's estate, Oyelowo will be voicing Bond and several characters in the Anthony Horowitz–penned novel, which also resurrects the cheesily named Bond girl Pussy Galore!
"I am officially the only person on planet Earth who can legitimately say: ‘I am the new James Bond’ – even saying that name is the cinematic equivalent of doing the ‘to be or not to be’ speech,” said Oyelowo to The Guardian this week.
Oyelowo is no stranger to playing iconic and race-bent roles, especially after his critically acclaimed turn in Henry VI for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2001. Unfortunately, this role met with racist comments and hate mail that argued that a black actor was unsuitable and wrong to play the English king.
The news comes hot on the heels of Idris Elba being the fan favourite and even Daniel Craig's recommended frontrunner for the next Bond iteration, which will come in two films, when Craig leaves his contract. Elba has been reluctant to feed into the rumours. He's said his time has passed. "If there was ever any chance of me getting Bond, it’s gone,” said Elba in April.

Elba has the support of Oyelowo, who points to the cultural resonance he would have as the first black onscreen Bond: "A titan on screen, he has all the qualities that you’d want in a James Bond. Because films and TV affect culture, a black Bond would be a cultural event . . . a statement . . . beyond just entertainment.”
The flak and racist tweets that have erupted whenever an actor like Michael B. Jordan takes on a role such as the Human Torch reveal a troubling unwillingness to encourage diverse and race-bent casting. With fictional characters, there's a great deal of leeway to reinterpret the roles and make a difference with diversity. If Oyelowo faces backlash as an audio James Bond, what might Elba face if he's to take on the onscreen role?

Of course, there's the argument that black and minority actors can create their own star media and films and that they don't need to take on characters who've always been white, which is certainly valid. But there's a huge cultural shift when you put Oyelowo or Jordan into iconic characters' shoes. It makes the diverse audience feel represented, and that's crucial in changing the face of Hollywood for the better.
We're extremely excited for Oyelowo's role as the new voice of Bond because it's encouraging to see that even the Ian Fleming estate is on board with this change. We can only hope that the next onscreen Bond makes the same cultural strides as the audio adaptation.
