Gardening shouldn’t be reserved just for those lucky enough to have a balcony or a garden. Give your home a fresh luscious feel year-round by gardening indoors! Taking care of plants is really not that complicated as long as you’re aware of a few things. Check out our key tips for a cool indoor garden.
Understand Your Space
Know where your natural light sources are to give you an idea of where you can to put the plants. Understanding the light in your space, and the times that it is available will help determine the type of plants that will survive. Plants range in sunlight requirement from “high” which means at least 6 hours of direct sunlight to “low” which means it can survive in ambient lighting.
You want to shop for plants that match the sunlight availability of your place to allow for healthy growth and ultimately lush plants. Knowing the light will also help determine where you want to place the plant. There is an incredible variety of shelves and pots that can help dress up that area of your place. Also knowing how warm your place is in terms of how it retains heat or if you like cooler temperatures recognizing your overall vibe will help determine how often you should be adding a little water to the plant.
Start Small
This is for the first-time gardener, start with a small and easy plant to raise, like an African Violet (which are super easy to transplant) or some leafy plants, like herbs, or spider plants. They require little attention but just enough that as they grow and become bigger, you’ll know you’re ready to move onto harder plants to care for.
Transplant 101
Find a plant pot bigger than the one you currently have, but not too big. Fill the new pot about 2/3 full with soil, make a little hole in the centre but not all the way through. Hold the plant at base and gently wiggle, don’t break any stems or pull the plant because you want the roots intact. Gently dig around the outside of the pot to loosen the plant (here’s little tip from me: I don’t water the plant for a day or two prior to me pulling it out so the soil has time to dry out and the plant just pops out the pot). Remove the plant from the previous pot, shake out the roots a bit, and place in the middle of hole in the new pot. Fill around the plant with soil, gently pressing as you go to secure plant. Water the plant and let the water soak in. You may need to add more soil or a bit more water. Check on the plant, and add water as needed.
Don’t Be Afraid Of Trying
Plants are beautiful additions to any space. As you work your way through the different types of plants, don’t be afraid of trying the more finicky plants that need lots of care. Stores have lots of varieties of plants that are miniature and come with a smaller price tag, so it’s not as daunting but can eventually work its way into your regular decor.
Final Touches
Fake it till you make it! Mix it up with some faux plants for instant lushness. When all else fails and there is that weird nook that could use a plant but doesn’t have windows, faux plants have come a far way. There are realistic versions of beautiful greenery and flowers available at a variety of stores.
