Witness the multicultural stage of Scotiabank International CHIN Picnic This Canada Day Weekend!
The largest free multicultural picnic in the world is getting ready to entertain the masses and it all goes down this weekend in Toronto! What can you expect? From Portuguese, Polish, Caribbean, Hispanic, South Asian, Filipino, Chinese, Italian, there’ll be a slew of events, live music, kid's zone, shopping bazaars and scrumptious foods from around the world for everyone to enjoy. This year's 48th annual Scotiabank CHIN Picnic will take place at the renowned Exhibition place in Toronto, June 28, 29 and July 1.
Legendary Miss CHIN Bikini & Mr. CHIN competition
Taking place this Canada Day long weekend, the multicultural festival draws in crowds of more than 250,000 attendees each year.
Must-see events include the annual staple: Miss CHIN Bikini and Mr CHIN International competition as well as a first for CHIN, a 2-day line-up of South-Asian entertaiment.
The competition this year will be a cathartic release for participants like Mariannthy Nicolaou, who had an emotionally tough year and is hoping to claim the Miss CHIN title.
“I had a tragic year last year, because my husband was killed. To get through it, I turned to health and fitness and decided to enter the CHIN bikini contest to reach my goals,” said Nicolaou in an interview with the Toronto Sun.
World Beat International Music Festival
The festival will also be playing host to Punjabi superstar Gippy Grewal, whose recent film Jatt James Bond smashed box office records. In the past year, he also became the first Punjabi actor to dub a Hollywood film with A Good Day To Die Hard.
He’ll be joining artist Sharry Mann at CHIN on July 29 for the Desi Rockstar show. Mann is a prolific musician since becoming a viral superstar after his 2001 single, Kudian Te Bassan, caught on with Punjabi youth. Mann will be singing tracks from his debut album, Yaar Anmulle.
If that wasn't enough to get the desi crowd rocking, on June 28, Yaadon Ki Baarat, a musical show will showcase four singers, musicians and dancers from the Bollywood film industry who will present a musical tribute to the '100 years of Bollywood' musical journey. They will re-live the music and hit songs of yesteryear singers such as the late Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Lata Mangheshkar, Asha Bhosle and many more.
The four singers are Rupali Ghogare, Srikant Narayan, Apurva Shah and Bhoomi Trivedi, who was a semi-finalist on the fifth cycle of Indian Idol in 2010. Trivedi has been on the rise since her fantastic rendition of Ram Chahe Leela that was featured in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram-Leela.
