BUZZ: Top 5 Hollywood Moments With Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan seems to live by Constantin Stanislavski's famous adage, “There are no small parts, only small actors,” with regard to his Hollywood career.

Whether he’s narrating his life story in Life of Pi or navigating his diasporic identity in The Namesake, Khan always makes his presence felt in his Hollywood movies. With his latest release, Jurassic World, we decided to look back at some of his best roles in Hollywood — however short and fleeting they were.

JURASSIC WORLD

Playing Simon Masrani, the CEO of the Masrani Corporation and the owner of the new park, we’re excited to see Khan have a bit of fun with a more straightforward Hollywood role that may include uttering lines like, “Never mind the numbers. How are the animals feeling?”

THE NAMESAKE

A personal favourite of Khan’s performances! In Mira Nair’s adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri's iconic novel, he plays Ashok Ganguli, the distant but loving father of Gogol (Kal Penn). Khan has such an irresistible chemistry with Tabu, and their gentle love story fuels the film when Penn tries earnestly.

THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN

If Anil Kapoor flaunted his five-minute spot in Mission Impossible 4, then so could Irrfan with his blink-and-miss role as a scientist who got to explain some heavy jargon. However, it’s his death scene that makes us laugh.

THE DARJEELING LIMITED

This was another lovely role. In Wes Anderson’s ode to India and dysfunctional brotherhood, Khan plays a father who loses his son and invites the brothers (Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Jason Schwartzman), who tried to rescue him, to take part in the funeral. It’s his expressive eyes that had us weeping through his understated role.

How could we miss out the movie that every non–South Asian claims is “their favourite Bollywood film ever!”
