On Mar 27th 2013, ABC Nightline aired an episode that opened up the controversial topic of gun violence in the U.S.A. The backlash of horrific incidences such as the wake of the shooting in Newtown, Conn., plus others has seen the rise of an unlikely business like Miguel Caballero's bulletproof clothing company based in Bogotá, Colombia. Best known for its fashion line of bulletproof clothing for adults and now children, the company originally catered to an elite client list that consisted of Prince Felipe of Spain, actor Steven Seagal, President Álvaro Uribe of Colombia, President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela and the President of the United States to name a few. Civilian parents li
ving in what they class deem as 'danger zones', have also begun to become clients, purchase protective items for their children. One such father, Demitric Boykin interviewed by ABC explained his rationale behind equipping his 4 year old daughter, Jaliyah with a military grade, 3lb bulletproof backpack.
Boykin said it just reflects "the world we live in."
"[It's] sad in a lot of ways," he said. "We shouldn't have to do these things. But in today's society, if we don't, who knows what tomorrow will look like." Boykin lives in Aurora, Colo., the infamous spot where the movie theater shooting took place July 2012 leaving 12 people dead and 58 injured, quoting abcnews.go.com.
Is this a case of extreme safety measures taken by an over-protective parent or a necessary protective measure we should all be looking into?
