Bollywood Actress Tannishtha Chatterjee Slams Indian Show For Poking Fun At Her Skin Tone

Parched is about to hit theatres, but hitting the airwaves instead is drama relating to one of its leading ladies, actress Tannishtha Chatterjee.

Okay, so this may not be the drama you're hoping for, but it certainly does bring up a good issue to the limelight it deserves. Bollywood actress Tannishtha Chatterjee recently called out TV show Comedy Nights Bachao, broadcast nationally in India on Colors TV after she was 'roasted' for her dark skin tone. Since her public expression of disgust and disappointment, Chatterjeee has received an apology from the network.

The situation has caused a furor online with millions tweeting, facebooking and instagramming in support of Chatterjee as the issue of skin color has long been a standing problem in a nation that deems fair skin a beauty ideal.

On Wednesday, Tannishtha Chatterjee revealed in a strongly-worded Facebook post that she had walked out in the middle of recording an episode with Comedy Nights Bachao where she was promoting her film Parched. "It was surprising that the only thing they found to roast was my skin tone. I sat through the first segment to figure out whether there would be something else they would find to roast but that was in vain" she told leading Indian news channel NDTV.

"I was there to promote the film Parched, which is about a lot of deep issues. I cannot stoop to such a level to promote my film," Ms Chatterjee said.

A spokesperson for Colors TV responded to Chatterjee's post on Facebook, saying the channel would ensure that the episode would be free of offensive content on the air and that channel management had "taken this up seriously" with the makers of Comedy Nights Bachao.

Colors also emphasized that they were committed to "creating content that is meaningful and addresses pertinent social issues — skin colour bias being one of them."

But Chatterjee didn't accept this apology. Rather, she responded by addressing a bigger issue.

Meanwhile, Comedy Nights Bachao host Krushna Abhishek apologized on the show's behalf and said the remark was not a "deliberate' attempt on the show's part to offend Ms Chatterjee," reported news agency IANS.

Tannishtha Chatterjee's decision to leave the show halfway met with incomprehension on the part of team Comedy Nights Bachao. "I spoke to them about it but the funny thing was that they didn't even get what I was saying. They responded by saying 'why don't we shoot your exit?' The second response was 'we'll change our roast, we'll try new things,'" Chatterjee told NDTV.

"They were not making fun of me. They were bringing up a deep prejudice which we've faced since childhood," explained Chatterjee.
