Film About 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy To Be Released This December
The film, Bhopal: a Prayer for Rain which is set to release Dec 5, is an emotional journey. Those who attended the special New York screening earlier this fall, at Manhattan’s Florence Gould Hall, experienced it for themselves.
Directed by Ravi Kumar and produced by Sahara Movie Studios and Rising Star Entertainment, this thrilling social commentary is based on the 1984 Bhopal Gas tragedy.
The screening was hosted by the film’s producers, Chandni Roy and Ravi Walia and stars who attended were: Martin Sheen, Kal Penn, Mischa Barton, Fagun Thakrar, Tannishtha Chatterjee, and David Brooks.
The story is narrated through the eyes of Dilip (Rajpal Yadav), a rickshaw driver in Bhopal, who lands a job at the Union Carbide Corporation. Dilip is not aware of his managers’ carelessness regarding plant safety hazards and this negligence ignites a tragedy that took thousands of lives.
The cast and crew
Kumar shares his experience of making this heart-wrenching film: “When we set out to make Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain, we wanted to share with younger people the untold events that led to one of the biggest chemical disasters of all time. The overwhelming reaction that we received from Americans and Indians alike at the screening tonight is like a huge pat on the back for all of us."

Thakrar writes in Huffington Post, "My character, ‘Rekha’ carries the emotional weight of the loss of her husband who is the first one to be killed in an industrial accident in the Carbide plant a few months prior to the big disaster. ‘Rekha’ serves as a reminder throughout the film of the true human cost of putting profits above people. In the 1980s a widow was treated as a pariah in Indian society. She would live on the edges of the society – seen but not heard. ‘Rekha’ carries her grief in her eyes and represents all the silent sufferers among the people of Bhopal.
Martin Sheen plays the CEO of Union Carbide Corporation, the chemical plant responsible for the toxic gas leak. As a result, 3,800 people died almost instantly, and more than half a million experienced the harmful gas exposure. In this tragedy’s aftermath, there have been 15,000 to 20,000 premature deaths.
“When I was invited to participate in the film about the Bhopal incident I felt compelled to accept,” says Sheen. “And the response to the film here reinforces the faith I had in the subject. It has been 30 years since the tragedy but it is as relevant as ever."
"It's a matter of immense pride for us that the thought behind Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain has been acknowledged and appreciated,” Roy and Walia tell India Glitz. “We really wanted to tell the story, as it happened, and we are honoured and privileged that we could show the film to such an elite gathering in New York."
