On a dreary day in Toronto, I got the opportunity to meet with the stunning makeup artist Carmindy at the luxurious Thompson Hotel in Toronto. For those of you who are fans of the hit television show, What Not to Wear, you'll know Carmindy for her positive and uplifting mantra of makeup artistry that helps transform women on screen into confident beauties with fool proof beauty tips. Being a huge fan of Carmindy and her work, the thought of meeting her and having a personal makeup consultation done by her made my head spin. I could recall evenings in front of the television screen watching What Not to Wear where I asked myself "I wonder what Carmindy would say about my makeup routine?"
That afternoon I got to hear exactly that. Plus I learned a bit about her beginnings as a makeup artist, her beauty brand Sally Hansen Natural Beauty and her hip iPhone and iPad app for all of ANOKHI techie beauty junkies.
Carmindy began her ventures into makeup artistry as a teenager when she was 15 years old. Her career was also influenced by her mother's watercolour artistry, "I loved the idea of the makeup and the fashion magazines and wanted to mix the two," says Carmindy But when she was approached with the opportunity to work on TLC's What Not to Wear, the "transition to help real women by providing them with very empowering information" culminated in the Carmindy we all know and love today.
Embrace Yourself Beauty
Me with the beautiful Makeup Artist, Carmindy after my makeover
Carmindy wanted to be a positive force in the beauty industry that gave real women the information they wanted. Tell them how to care for themselves and how to celebrate themselves. This is paramount in her empowering mantra:
"You are amazing as you are, makeup should be celebratory, and not about hiding behind a mask of products that make you aware of your insecurities. For most women makeup is an unpleasant part of their routine because they see it as magnifying what makes them feel uncomfortable," but Carmindy's work strives to overcome this.
The Carmindy App
When I asked Carmindy why she created the iPhone app she said, "I wanted to have a way for women to carry me in their pocket." With three published books under her belt an iPhone app is simply a natural progression. The app echoes Carmindy's first book The Five Minute Face (http://www.carmindy.com/books) except it has the ease of use with videos and tips available on your iPhone.
The app helps women to answer the common daunting question of "What makeup colors are right for me?" Women can avatar themselves by picking their hair and eye colour and most importantly for us South Asian ladies, skin tone. Each women will get 5 personalized looks based on their appearance broken down for them with a variety of product recommendations from many different lines including NARS, M.A.C and of course her own makeup line.
Carmindy's Makeup Line: Sally Hansen Natural Beauty
Sally Hansen natural Beauty (sallyhansennaturalbeauty.com) is a line inspired by Carmindy's idea of beauty: makeup should enhance one's natural features to bring out the beautiful you that was always there. In my 5-minute face makeover by Carmindy (picture below), I got introduced to the line and came out with two favs I use on the regular.
Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Forever Star Moisture Gloss in Brandy Wine — this beautiful deep brown gloss goes great with my skin tone and smells just like a creamsicle, yum!
Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Fast Fix Concealer in Medium — Plagued with dark under eye circles, this pot of concealer is great friend. Unlike other formulas this one feels light when applied under the eyes and has just the right amount of yellow undertone.
When leaving my amazing meeting with Carmindy, I commented on how light her makeup job felt on, Carmindy's response: "Makeup should always be sheer as can be, everything is always as sheer as a water colour." A tip I know keep in mind every day.
