Bajirao Mastani, the highly anticipated film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, promises to have all the workings of a typical Bollywood love story set in historical times.
Bajirao Mastani will see a December 19, 2015, release. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. The first look and teaser trailer were released on Friday, July 17, to much acclaim. The trailer acquired more than 2 million views in 24 hours — a testament to the film's hype.
The film looks like a typical Bhansali film, giving us doses and healthy reminders of his past hits Devdas and Goliyon Ki Raasleela, Ram-Leela. There is a clear love triangle in this film. Bajirao and Mastani love each other and Kashibai is hung out to dry — or so it seems!
Bhansali first announced the project back in 2003 after completing Devdas, but he shelved the project due to casting difficulties. He went on to make Black, Saawariya and Ram-Leela in the meantime. In mid-2013, he revived the Bajirao Mastani project and cast Ranveer and Deepika in lead roles and cast Priyanka in the role of Bajirao's first wife.
Ranveer Singh enacts the role of Baji Rao Ballal Balaji Bhat, also known as Bajirao. He was a well-respected general who served as prime minister to the fourth Maratha Chhatrapati (Emperor) Chhatrapati Shahu Raje Bhonsle from 1720 until his death. He is highly credited for the expansion of the Maratha Empire. He was married first to Kashibai, with whom he had two sons, and he also married Mastani much later, with whom he had another son.
Deepika Padukone enacts the role of Mastani, the daughter of a Hindu Maharaja Chhatrasal of Bundelkhand Province and his Persian-Muslim wife Ruhaani Bai. Mastani is often referred to as Baji Rao’s mistress; however, she was his lawfully wedded second wife.
Priyanka Chopra plays the role of Kashibai, who was Baji Rao's first wife. Kashibai had two sons with Baji Rao and was highly devoted to her husband. Baji Rao never gave her a second status after marrying Mastani, and Kashibai didn't mind Mastani.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a master filmmaker and the man behind some of my absolute favourite Bollywood films, such as: Khamoshi: The Musical, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Black. Unfortunately Goliyon Ki Raasleela, Ram-Leela — with its hot lead duo, killer music and whimsical setting and costumes — was not enough to make it to my coveted list. But, if it delivers what it promises, Bajirao Mastani could very well make it to my list of faves as it promises lots of high-octane drama, action and hopefully Ranveer Singh topless.
