Lately it seems I’m always writing this letter either just having returned from a trip or just before leaving for a trip. In a couple of days, I’m heading off to Jamaica for a quick, nobody-speak-to-me, Zen beach vacation.
There is something very special about travelling outside your comfort zone and beyond your borders where new sights, sounds and smells await. It’s an exhilarating journey for all of your senses. Whether it’s a road trip to a destination just an hour away or an 11-hour flight to the far corner of the earth, travelling, for me at least, does the mind, body and soul good.
And, of course, I always bring trinkets from the lands recently explored back home with me. It might be something prominent, like the handmade Berber rug I picked up in a market in Morocco; something dainty and delightful, like the wooden dolls I bought in Tokyo; or a postcard from the Vatican. My home is my haveli, my sanctuary and my abode and I love to surround myself with things that excite and comfort me. My place, filled with textiles, colours and patterns, is a place where high-end pieces mingle effortlessly with garage sale finds and global décor pieces nestle among them.
My home is a reflection of me, my life, my journey and what inspires me and soothes me — exactly what a home should be.
That’s why when we decided to theme our May 2015 issue The Home & Travel Issue, it made perfect sense to me.
Our expanded Home & Travel section will get you in the décor state of mind, featuring great pieces in the hottest colour for the home (Marsala Madness, page 46) and fab patio décor ideas (Get Out!, page 47). It will also get you itching to travel with our piece on exploring key Indian cities (Rediscovering Indian Metropolises, page 52). And if you’ve flirted with the idea of travel blogging as a career, you’re in luck. Check out our interview with one professional blogger (A Blogger’s Life, page 56).
And, of course, we didn’t forget mom. We help you fête her with brunch (Brilliant Brunch, page 45) on her special day.
It’s also time to shed winter’s heavy blanket and emerge revitalized for spring with our latest news, runway reports and tips from the fashion, beauty and style worlds. And we delve into the popular (and possibly polarizing) Lean-In movement to see if it really does fit our lifestyle (A Step Back, page 54).
So whether it’s at home or on your next journey, it’s always exhilarating when you are open to your next source of inspiration. So go ahead, let it in!
