5 Expert Tips on How to Change Up Your Beauty Routine This Season
Every season change requires us to revamp our skin care routine. As you come out of the cold winter weather, your skin will need some extra TLC and you’ll need to step up your sun protection.
Dr. Ashlin Alexander, owner of the Ashlin Alexander Facial Cosmetic Surgery Clinic in Toronto, provides us with five tips on how to give your skin care routine a spring makeover.
ONE SPF, SPF, SPF
Those of us with darker complexions aren’t immune to the aging effects of the sun’s rays. As the sun becomes stronger in the upcoming spring season, it’s critical to have a strong SPF in your day cream to shield your skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays. In fact, our elevated skin pigment can actually make us more susceptible to pigmentary irregularities from excess sun exposure (dark spots, brown patches, melasma). When it’s overcast, a large portion of the sun’s rays still penetrate the cloud cover, therefore daily sun protection is key. I recommend using SPF 30 or greater all year round.
TWO Switch Up Your Skin Care Regime
Canadian winters are harsh on the skin. To shed the layers of dry, winter-embattled skin and reveal a more radiant complexion, I recommend using a medical grade skin care line that includes 0.5 or one per cent retinol. Retinol works to stimulate collagen and elastin production, promote cellular function, and provide even skin tone and smooth texture for a brighter, healthier look. Medical grade skin care lines can be obtained from your physician.
THREE Try a Resurfacing Peel
Once we enter our 30s, cell turnaround starts to slow down and skin can look dull and dry, especially after a cold winter season. A resurfacing peel might be just what you need to jumpstart your skin and restore its youthful glow. You’ll want to tailor your peel to skin type and individual blemishes. A light peel using natural substances can give your skin a much-needed boost with minimal downtime and noticeable results.
FOUR Opt for an Instant Refresh
If you’re looking for a spring pick-me-up with immediate effects and no downtime, injectables are an excellent option for refreshing after a harsh winter. Conservative treatment of the key aging areas, including the forehead, crow’s feet and laugh lines, can revitalize a tired-looking face for an instantly fresher, more energetic appearance. Hyaluronic acid fillers are the safest injectable filler material available and can help restore volume to an aging face. You’ll still look like you, just a brighter, more refreshed version.
