From July 10 to 17, London witnessed Europe’s largest platform for Indian cinema. The London Indian Film Festival celebrated Indian independent cinema and brought audiences a rare selection of cutting-edge films from the Indian subcontinent. The festival opened with a premiere of Sold, a powerful film about a schoolgirl’s struggle to survive after being sold into prostitution, starring Gillian Anderson and Neerja Naik. The festival closed with Samruddhi Porey’s Hemalkasa, a biopic about Magsaysay Award-winning doctors Prakash Baba Amte and Mandakini Amte starring Nana Patekar and Sonali Kulkarni. Other films showcased included Million Dollar Arm, Sulemani Keeda and Hank and Asha. The highlight of the event was a candid interview with multi-talented Indian star Farhan Akhtar by Nick James, editor of Sight & Sound. Ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan also delivered a talk at the British Film Institute. Other celebrities present at the festival included Vidhu Vinod and Anupama Chopra; British cricketer Monty Panesar; Nana Patekar; Neerja Naik; Bollywood and Tamil film star Amy Jackson; DJ Nihal from BBC Radio; LIFF director Cary Sawhney; LIFF founders Chris Hainsworth, Naman Ramachandran, Satwant Gill and Pankaj Kharche; Gillian Anderson; producer Jane Charles; and director Jeffrey Brown.
