The Palm Springs International Film Festival, one of North America’s largest film festivals, celebrated its 25th anniversary this year from January 3 to 13. With 135,000 attendees, the star-studded film festival screened 191 films from 60 countries, including 77 international premieres. The festival’s awards gala was presented by Cartier and sponsored by Mercedes-Benz and Entertainment Tonight. Cartier watches were presented to all honourees and Cartier jewelry was worn by select presenters and guests including Amy Adams, Mary Hart, Camila Alves McConaughey, Matthew McConaughey, Steve McQueen and Lupita Nyong’o. Twelve Canadian films were screened as Canadian cinema received the spotlight this year for making extraordinary strides. Indian director Nagesh Kukunoor’s film Lakshmi received the award for best narrative feature. Pan Nalin’s Faith Connections, a documentary set during the Kumbh Mela, was one of the international premieres screened. Other notable names present at the festival included The Edge, Bono, Meryl Streep, Idris Elba, Gary Oldman, Alexandra Edenborough, Bruce Dern, Elisabeth Röhm, Bradley Cooper, Shea Whigham, Paul Herman, director David O. Russell, Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks.
