The New York Indian Film Festival was presented at the Paris Theatre in Manhattan. From May 4 to 8 the red carpet was rolled out to welcome some on the finest Indian stars this side of the ocean. The festival opened with a screening of Do Dooni Chaar, the first Disney live action Hindi film.
Stars such as Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, writer/director Habib Faisal, Rehana Mirza, Pulitzer Prize winner Siddhartha Mukherjee, Sarita Choudhury, Ami Sheth, Poorna Jagannathan, Aparna Sen, Madhur Jaffrey, Aditya Bhattacharya, Ajay Naidu, Samrat Hakrabarti, Meetu Chilana, Salman Rushdie, Mira Nair, Ambassador Prakash Shah, Consul General Prabhu Dayal among many other Indian talents and dignitaries joined the masses to view the f ilms over the course of the festival. Gala dinners and panel discussions were held to support the films shown and the artists that made them. The event closed with the NYIFF award show.
The winners were Sthaniya Sambaad directed by Arjun Gourisaria and Moinak Biswas for best feature film; Aparna Sen for best director; Rishi Kapoor for best actor; Konkona Sen Sharma for best actress; best screenplay went to Mohan Raghavan; Bhopali received best documentary; and best short film went to Just That Sort Of A Day.
