As I sat down and thought about our September Issue, my style senses were brilliantly tingling. In keeping with the editorial mandate that I had brought on as the Editor-In-Chief— where we would theme each issue to give you readers more bang for your hard-earned buck—this particular installment, our second Fashion & Style Issue has undoubtedly given me an elevated sense of excitement. The Fall ready-to-wear season is recognized in the industry as one huge celebration. To fashionistas around the world, it’s Christmas, Diwali, Holi and Eid all beautifully packaged into one glorious gift, generously doled out on one runway to the next in couture hotspots like Mumbai, Lahore, Milan, New York, London and Paris.
So in that spirit, I wanted to take this issue and give it a spin. It’s a breath of freshness, a dash of fierceness and loads of fun. We are taking apart the obvious, steering clear of the expected and bravely tearing down barriers. In my heart of hearts, the core of the Fashion & Style issue is to break free from the routine and let creativity exude in all of its eccentric, unique and ANOKHI glory. This is the one time of the year that we can really go at it hardcore. Comfort zone be damned!
We're taking a cue from heralded musical fashion mavericks —Jimi Hendrix, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Rihanna—who all have mastered the art of ditching fashion formulas and creating their very own identity. (Tell me that you don't think of Jimi Hendrix's patchwork jeans at Woodstock when you think of the Star Spangled Banner. See? I rest my case). Today’s hottest international music sensation, Jay Sean, who is featured in our Open Chest/Cover Story on page 20 shows us the new suave. We shot him here in Toronto at the ever-so-fashionable Thompson Hotel—a perfect location for the perfect shoot. Did you do a double take when you saw our first-ever male solo cover? Fabulous.
Fast-forward to our Fashion & Style sections and you’ll notice a wonderfully- cultivated collection of the hottest tips, tricks and must-haves that you definitely need to play with. We amped up the creativity quotient with our first-ever concept shoot, Down The Rabbit Hole on page 66. Our Beauty pages starting from page 77, are filled to the brim with the latest in this season’s hottest palettes.
In keeping with our dictum of global cool in fashion, style and beyond, we feature exclusive chats with international designer Roberto Cavalli in Singapore (Courting Cavalli, page 53) and uber-director Shyam Benegal in India (Being Benegal, page 34). We explore the riveting phenomenon of online virtual worlds (Flesh Or Fantasy, page 100) as well as redefine the world of workplace love-connections (The New Office Romance, page 102). Inspiration manifests itself in many ways.
So this season, grab your attitude by the lapels and stilettos, take charge, and join us in this brave new world!
Best,
