From May 5 to 10, the 14th edition of the New York Indian Film Festival was held at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. The festival featured 34 films from the Indian subcontinent that included narrative and documentary films in various Indian regional languages including Hindi, Marathi and Bengali. Films from Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka were also showcased. The festival kicked off with the screening of Anurag Kashyap’s hard-hitting new film Ugly. Nagesh Kukunoor’s film Lakshmi, that highlights the daring subject matter of child prostitution and human trafficking, received a lot of appreciation from the audience. Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha was present to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her debut film Bhaji on the Beach. The closing film of the festival was Goynar Baksho directed by Aparna Sen. The film focused on the tale of three generations of women and their changing position in society. Others present at the festival included British-American actor Samrat Chakrabarti, New York-based actress Meetu Chilana, Indian stand-up comedian Anuvab Pal, president of the Indo-American Arts Council Aroon Shivdasani, director of hospitality of IAAC Vasanti Mirchandani, Pakistani directors Babar Ahmed and Meenu Gaur, director Veena Bakshi, veteran actor Dr. Mohan Agashe and writer/director Amit V Masurkar.
