Co-Host, CBC News Toronto
She is the freshest—and probably most stunning—face announcing the supper hour news on TV in Toronto. Anne-Marie Mediwake is the co-host of all of CBC News Toronto evening newscasts. (The CBC is Canada's national public broadcaster.) Mediwake and her co-host are the only non-white duo to anchor a major newscast in Toronto.
The award-winning journalist has been charming and informing Canadians since the early '90s. Mediwake says her natural curiosity and passion for storytelling is rooted in her Scottish-Sri Lankan ancestry. Prior to joining CBC, she co-anchored Global Television's Toronto flagship newscast and helmed the CTV investigate current affairs show 21C, a show that has gone on to win a Gemini (the Canadian equivalent of an Emmy). While at CTV, she also reported for the National News with Lloyd Robertson, Canada AM and Newsnet. She has also worked as the weekday morning anchor for CBC News Network.
For her journalistic work and involvement with local charities, Mediwake was also nominated in 2007 for Canada's Top 35 under 35 list, which recognizes Christian leaders in the community. And when the devastating tsunami hit Sri Lanka in 2004, Mediwake travelled to her birth country, hosting a heartfelt documentary called Sri Lanka: A Journey Home. The following year, she wrote a documentary with hubby and TV journalist Darryl Konynenbelt called A Delightful Inheritance about homesteaders who immigrated from Holland to Canada at the turn of the 20th century.
In 2007, Mediwake and her husband expanded their family with triplets and chronicled their experiences with pregnancy and birth in the wildly popular and hilarious National Post column called the Triplet Journal. Mediwake has even walked the runway, lighting up the catwalk with her winsome smile in a Scottish-inspired red dress during the 2010 Heart Truth fashion show in Toronto.
