Professional boxer
He was catapulted into the limelight when he won an Olympic silver medal in 2004. From then on, Amir Khan’s star has only been rising. The Pakistani lad from Bolton has become Britain's highestprofile boxer, racking up an impressive professional fight record. He began training at the tender age of 11 and quickly went on to win gold at the 2003 Junior Olympics. Then, as a 17-year-old, he qualified as Britain’s sole boxing representative at the Athens Olympic Games and went on to win the silver medal.
When he lost for the first time in his professional career in September 2008, Khan shied away from the media frenzy. Instead of dwelling on his loss, he threw himself into a new grueling training regime with esteemed U.S. coach Freddie Roach. Khan was only 22 when he won the World Boxing Light Welterweight Champion title in July 2009. Nicknamed King Khan, his fighting style is well-defined by his speed, stamina and boxing skills.
Previously, Khan has also won titles from the World Boxing Association in the lightweight championships, and at the Commonwealth Games.
Khan says boxing has been an obsession, but the man also has a heart of gold. He has spent one million pounds, from his own money, to help open the Gloves Community Centre and boxing gym in Bolton, which were built to get youth off the streets. He also raised a million pounds for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami disaster. After the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, Khan personally went to Pakistan and handed out food parcels to children in a camp. More recently, when devastating floods hit Pakistan in August 2010, Khan again flew out to some of the worst-affected areas and, with the global charity Oxfam, helped distribute aid to displaced victims.
