Plastic surgeon Dr. Khanna discusses breast enlargement and breast enhancement procedures.
There are many reasons why some women want to increase their breast size or change the appearance of their breasts, from not being happy with their naturally small bust size, to fixing changes caused from hormones, weight loss and aging.
Typically, implants are used for breast enlargement or augmentation. These implants, either saline or gel based, are placed either above or beneath the breast muscle to create a fuller bust line.
In her clinical practice, leading Canadian cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Julie Khanna looks beyond the surgical procedure to the patient as a whole, from inner self to outer beauty. “Each procedure is unique to each patient. The best results come from first understanding patient needs and desires, and then providing a tailor–made solution that meets the personal expectations of that patient,” she explains. Dr. Khanna also takes pride in informing her patients of the most modern methods of cosmetic surgery, enabling them to make informed choices. “I’m here to educate my patients about all the options available and help them decide what’s appropriate for their lifestyle and the desired outcome.”
One of these methods is a procedure called breast fat transfer, an alternative to implants. As the name indicates, fat is retrieved from elsewhere in the body (usually the abdomen or buttocks) in a process similar to liposuction, and then transferred to the breast. The best candidate for this method is someone who is looking to add fullness, volume and contour to her breasts without dramatically increasing breast size. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Body fat is harvested from another area, then gently extracted using a small, blunt needle. Once collected, the fat tissue is treated and primed, then deposited to the breasts. This procedure gives patients a naturally enhanced bust line. It is not meant to replace breast augmentation, as the results vary between the two treatments.
Dr. Julie Khanna received her medical degree from the University of Ottawa and completed her training in plastic surgery at McMaster University. She is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.
