Ambanis Bring Unique Krishna Paintings to Chicago
There’s a lot more to Nita Ambani than being the wife of India’s richest citizen and the first lady of Reliance Industries.
And no we’re not talking about the 27-story private home she shares with her husband Mukesh and their three children. She handles a large portfolio of projects that range from chairing the board of a newly launched hospital to owning a cricket league and a football league. Most recently, she was in Chicago for the launch of a special exhibit, primarily sponsored by the Reliance Foundation.

“Gates of the Lord: The Tradition of Krishna Paintings” opened at the Art Institute of Chicago, bringing together over a hundred pieces of textiles and miniature paintings, curated from different private and public collections in India.

The exhibition explores the visual culture of the Pushtimarj, a Hindu denomination from western India. The sect reveres Shrinanji — a divine incarnation of the Hindu god Krishna as a seven-year-old child.

Along with wanting to expose the world to India’s rich heritage, the exhibit is also somewhat of a personal project for Ambani. The family are believers in Shrinanji and the show offers the opportunity to bring the culture to a global audience.
