Water is the healthiest thirst buster available but getting that daily amount can be tasking. Adding some flavour to your water is an easy way to help you get there.
Herbs, Flowers and Spices
Adding a sprig of mint seems like an obvious water pairing but how about adding a little basil, thyme, cilantro or rosemary to mixes. Just be conscious of the flavour and you just want a hint of flavour; too much can overpower other flavours and make the water bitter. Or try delicate lavender, citrus blossoms, violets, hibiscus or rose flowers as part of the infusions. These unique flavours are gentle on the palette and can be an exotic addition to water. Just make sure whatever flower or herb you're using is pesticide free. Spices like cinnamon, cardamon, ginger and vanilla can also be added to water infusions but use them in moderation, like the herbs.
Fruit and Veggie Knockouts
Fruits seem like the obvious thing when it comes to jazzing up water. Citrus fruits, like lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit are easy go-to water infusions. Add slices of the fruits to water by matching the number of slices to the amount of water; think one slice per cup. Don't forget to wash the rind thoroughly before adding to your beverage. Berries, melons, apples, pears and tropical fruits like pineapple or mango are amazing to add a hint of sweetness to water. Veggies like cucumber and fennel will add savoury refreshing hints of flavour. Just add chunks or slices of the fruits or veggies and let it steep for at least a couple hours before you enjoy.
Variations of Water
Major retailers, such as Walmart or London Drugs, usually have their aisles stocked with great water infusion drops that can add that kick of flavour to any bottle of water. There are endless flavour options between the Miniute Maid Drops Flavour Enhancers ($4.19 CDN), Dasani Drops Flavour Enhancers ($3.78 CDN) or Mio Liquid Water Enhancer ($3.65 CDN), there are even sweet tea options, POWERADE Flavour Enhancers ($3.94 CDN), or even Crush Liquid Water Enhancers ($2.48 CDN). Just add a few drops to water and enjoy. Or take it one notch further and add some fresh fruit along with the drops and enjoy.
For a brunch beverage (2 servings): Combine 2 cups water, a couple slices of lime, a couple slices of cucumbers, 2 sliced strawberries and a sprig of mint. Let steep overnight and serve over ice.
For a party make a fresh jug of agua fresca (4 servings): Prepare 1 cup honey syrup (mix ½ cup honey and ½ cup water over low heat and then let cool). Blend 4 cups fruit (try melons or berries) and strain. Combine honey syrup, blended fruits, ¼ lemon or lime juice and a pinch of salt in a jug. To serve, add ice to glass and fill 2/3 way to the top, then top with soda water.
Geeta's workout elixir (1 serving): Combine 3 cups water or coconut water, 1.5 tablespoon chia seeds, 2 slices fresh ginger and 1 tablespoon honey. Shake and enjoy.
