Diverse Barbie Breaking Records
Barbie sales have fallen for three consecutive years, but the release of a diverse doll has stopped that losing streak.
Barbie was once a hot item that has been replaced by technology and a variety of high-tech toys. But Mattel created a one-of-a-kind doll for Selma director Ava DuVernay as a Barbie doll based on inspirational women in the entertainment industry. This doll sold out within minutes.
Could a lack of diverse Barbie dolls have been the reason for falling sales? It seems like. When it comes to diverse toys, diversity is more than skin-deep — with variations in hair texture, eye colour and facial structure all helping kids see themselves in their favourite toys.
Here are the diverse Barbie dolls that are making a change.
1. Ava DuVernay Barbie

After an outpouring of support from fans wanting a doll that looks like the director, wishes came true. This beautiful doll sold out in minutes and fans are reaching out to Mattel to release more.
2. Zendaya Barbie

After Fashion Police commentator Giuliana Rancic commented on Zendaya's dreadlocks, saying, "I feel like she smells like patchouli oil … or weed," Barbie immortalized the star's stunning locks look for the 2015 Oscars. Zendaya spoke out about this issue publicly, and Mattel honoured her as a role model for standing up for yourself and for what she believes in.
3. Barbie Fashionista Line

This line of diverse Barbies comes from the number of parents who want dolls to reflect the ethnic diversity of their families. This fashionista line includes 23 dolls with eight different skin tones, 14 different facial structures, 22 hairstyles, 23 hair colours, and 18 eye colours.
4. Katrina Kaif Barbie

In 2009 Barbie released a doll with the likeness of Katrina Kaif. This Bollywood star was the first to model for India's Barbie doll, giving Bollywood fans a doll they can look up too.
