Whether it’s a romantic date, a family outing or just some much needed me-time, picnics are the perfect way to get outside and enjoy the warm weather and indulge in some al fresco eating.
Being prepared is the key to having a mess- and fuss-free time, so we’ve got some tips on the essentials for the perfect picnic.

Individually wrapped foods are convenient and mess free. Think bite-sized cheese snacks, mini sandwiches and fruits like grapes or berries that have no peels or seeds. If you prefer desi snacks like samosas, stick to the mini cocktail variety for easy eating.

Those insulated lunch bags for your daily tiffin can come in handy if you need to keep your samosas warm and your chutneys cool. Use them for other hot or cool foods and drinks too. Be sure to use separate bags for your warm and cool items!
3. Proper Packing
You know our desi foods can get messy so be sure to line your container with wax paper or even good old paper towels to absorb some of the excess.
For fruits or sandwiches, avoid the bulk of boxes and use plastic baggies to keep them fresh instead. When you’re done, there’s less to carry back.
4. Hygiene and Clean Up
Hand sanitizer is essential to make sure all your finger foods remain germ free as you’re eating. Be sure to pack wet wipes and dry tissues to clean up any greasy fingers after. Pick up travel sized versions of all these items at your local drugstore so there’s more room for food in your picnic basket!
5. Keeping Comfortable
If you’re heading to the beach and likely to take a dip, along with your towel, pack an extra set of under things in case your swim suit doesn’t dry fast enough or your other set gets wet. Trust us on this one, you DO NOT want to be damp on the ride home.
6. Practical Picks

Band aids are always safe bets for that little nick or scratch. Be sure to clean it off with your sanitizer first! Pack extra plastic bags for wet, sandy or muddy clothes, picnic blankets or towels to avoid getting the rest of your bag or basket messy. They’re also handy to collect garbage so you can leave the spot as clean as you found it.
7. Be Safe
Regardless of your skin tone, you must wear sunscreen so make sure to carry it with you for reapplication. If you’re prone to burning or heat exhaustion, a big beach umbrella is a must.
8. The Luxuries

If you’re so inclined and have the room in your basket these extras can help enhance your picnic experience.
- Battery operated fans: They last for a good few hours and can help keep you cool on a sunny beach.
- Small blue tooth speaker: Play your favourite tunes wirelessly via your phone.
- Phone battery pack: In case your phone battery gets drained, a portable pre-charged battery pack is a life saver.
