How To Curb Your Indulgence At The Next Indian Wedding Buffet
The big fat Indian wedding. Oh, boy. Where do we even start? Rich, creamy curries, a dessert table that goes on for miles with the favourite syrupy gulab jamun, plus the inevitable open bar — it’s a health hazard. So I thought, why not offer a few tips on how to curb those bad habits that creep up during peak wedding months?
Don't lose hope. There's always a solution!
1) Wear Snug Clothing: This sounds weird, I know. I'm a non-Indian myself, but from seeing what people wear at these parties, I know there's not a lot of "dessert" room in those beautiful lenghas.
2) Water Is a Dieter's Best Friend: Drink plenty of water. Water helps control your appetite by making you feel fuller faster.
3) Eat Before the Party Starts: Don't go to wedding events starving. Eat a healthy breakfast and a low-calorie snack before heading to dinner to curb your urge to indulge. You're less likely to overeat if you've got your appetite under control.
4) Eat the Special Stuff: Don't blow your precious calories on large portions of foods that you can eat every day. Fill your plate with smaller portions of your favourites.
5) No Seconds: If you eat slowly and drink plenty of water with your meal, you shouldn't feel the need to go for seconds because you’ll feel full.
6) Avoid Finger Foods: Hors d'oeuvres can be high in calories and fat. Steer clear.
7) Survey the Buffet: Before diving head-first into the buffet, give the fare a once-over and ask yourself what items will satisfy your hunger and your health. Next, ask what indulgences you'll treat yourself to without going overboard.
8) Stop when You're Full: This may sound obvious, but stopping when you're full is probably one of the hardest things to do — especially if you’re ingesting the delights fast, because the brain doesn’t have time to realize that you’re actually full. It will be easier to know when to stop if you slow down and chew, drink water, and wear that snug dress! 🙂
9) Drink Alcohol only in Moderation: Alcohol lowers your inhibitions, which makes it that much easier to justify a third helping of butter chicken as well as adding a lot of empty calories.
And, speaking of which….
10) Avoid Overly Rich Alcoholic Drinks: Aim for clear drinks and spritzers, as they're lighter in calories. Limit yourself. By the time everyone has had a few drinks, they won't realize your glass is just full of soda water!
