Time to add another feather in Salman Khan's cap: singing. Khan has shown his vocal chops in the "Main Hoon Hero Tera" track from his production Hero, which introduces Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty. We decided to look back at the actors who could admirably hold a note and the ones who should be banned from the microphone.
Amitabh Bachchan — "Rang Barse Bheege Chunarwali"
Move over "Balam Pichkari," there's only one Holi song that makes us smile the most and attempt to reach Amitabh Bachchan's deep baritone voice. Bachchan's voice is the highlight of this classic, whether he's hiccuping or drawling for extra scandal quotient. After this song, Bachchan has shown more versatility with Nishabd's "Rozaana," where he warbles for a higher note. He also shone trying out EDM with son Abhishek in Buddha Hoga Tera Baap's "Go Meera Go."
Shraddha Kapoor — "Galliyan"
Out of the younger crop of Bollywood stars, Shraddha Kapoor might have the most melodious voice with her song "Galliyan" from Ek Villain. She's also one of the rare actors who can perform live without any hiccups. Kapoor also performed in Kashmiri for "Do Jahan" from Haider, holding her own with Suresh Wadkar. We hope there's more from her soon.
Priyanka Chopra & Farhan Akhtar — "Dil Dhadakne Do"
While Priyanka Chopra has already made a big splash with her music career in the West with "Exotic" and "In My City," she hadn't done much crooning in Bollywood until singing the title track from Dil Dhadakne Do. Chopra has a husky and playful voice, which is tons of fun, but unfortunately we can't say the same of Akhtar, who grates on the ears with his warbling. We get that his perennial "I've got a cough" voice is swoon-worthy when he speaks, but the guy can't just talk-sing! Back away from the mic, Farhan!
Abhishek Bachchan — "Thayn Thayn"
We'll extend that invitation to stop singing to Abhishek Bachchan, who really needs to stop rapping. While he's no Yo Yo Honey Singh in terms of sheer annoyance, Bachchan rapped for Dum Maaro Dum's "Thayn Thayn" — but without any sense of pace or rhythm, he quickly abandoned his plan for a rap album after merciless mockery on social media. We hope that, next time, Bachchan takes some harmonizing lessons with his father!
There are many things that "Bhai" can do, from inventing the latest dance move to bringing back adorable kids to their homes. Singing, however, is not his strongest suit. With "Main Hoon Hero Tera," Khan earnestly croons in his vaguely Mohit Chauhan style. But when he sang in the press earlier last week, it made us slightly thankful for the invention of autotune.
What's your take on Bollywood celebs taking up singing? Do they have what it takes?
