Oily Skin
If you’re anything like me, you’re looking forward to relishing in the beautiful summer heat that’s about to (hopefully) fall upon us. But the one thing that’s not so hot about summer is the way that it leaves skin looking and feeling a lot slicker than usual—when humidity rises, so does the level of natural oils your skin secretes. South Asians usually descend from warm climates, which could be why so many of us struggle with oily skin all year round. Here’s a homemade facial to treat your oily, acne-prone skin.
The acidity of lemons makes it a great cleanser for curbing excess oil.
· Blend two tablespoons of baking soda in lemon juice, enough to make the texture pasty.
· Gently scrub it into your skin using small circular motions.
· Rinse off with warm water and apply an oil-free moisturizer.
For something a little gentler:
· Add four teaspoons of lemon juice to a quarter cup of white milk. The milk should curdle with the lemon.
· Use a cotton ball to dab the mixture all over your face and neck.
· Rinse your face with lukewarm water.
Dry Skin
It might be warm and sunny outside now, but if you live in North America, you probably know all to well that there’s no escaping the wrath of winter when it comes back with a vengeance in a few months. It doesn’t matter how dark or fair you are, extreme weather conditions can wreak havoc on your skin by slowing down the production of natural oils. In other words, it sucks the natural moisture that your skin needs to stay healthy and hydrated. And it isn’t just the hard bite of bitter cold—a lot of people suffer from persistently dry skin. Here’s a homemade facial to help soothe flaky, irritated skin.
Avocados are known for their moisturizing power, as is honey—so why not use them together?
· Peel, seed and mash half a fresh, ripe avocado (ripe avocados should be soft.)
· Stir in ¼ cup of honey.
· Apply the mixture on your face.
· After 10 minutes, use a cool, damp washcloth to wipe it off. Avoid using hot water, which can make dry skin worse.
Uneven Complexion
Everybody produces melanin, the pigment that’s responsible for giving you your unique skin color. People with darker skin tones, like most South Asians, have higher concentrations of melanin in their bodies. The good thing about having more melanin is that it’s thought to protect better against UV rays—ever notice that your fair-skinned friends burn faster than in the sun than you do? Thank your melanin! The downside however, is that your skin is more likely to develop dark spots and discolored patches. Here’s a homemade facial to help brighten and balance your complexion.
If you’re South Asian, chances are you’ve got turmeric powder (haldi) somewhere in your kitchen. It’s a staple for Indian cooking but also for skin care.
· Start with three tablespoons of white milk. You can also use regular yogurt.
· Add one teaspoon of turmeric powder and two tablespoons of flour.
· Add a drop or two of honey and mix it all together.
· Apply a thin layer of the paste over your face and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes.
· Rinse it off with lukewarm water.
