The music event that aims to change lives worldwide.
Save-the-date to watch the Global Citizen Festival, the music festival with a purpose, on Saturday, September 26, live from Central Park's Great Lawn. The free concert, consisting of 60,000 global citizens, aims to help end extreme poverty by 2030.
The latest roster of celebrity attendees announced includes actor Leonardo DiCaprio, singer-songwriter Bono, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Nobel Peace Prize-winner and activist Malala Yousafzai as well as business moguls and humanitarians Richard Branson, Bill and Melinda Gates and Mark Zuckerberg.
Headlined by Beyoncé, Pearl Jam, Ed Sheeran, and Coldplay, the concert will be hosted by Hugh Jackman, Deborra-Lee Furness, Stephen Colbert, Salma Hayek Pinault, Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde.
How do you get such diverse personalities into one venue? Get them to respond to a global call to action of course.
“This extraordinary group of leaders, activists and advocates have the power to help realize the ambitious Global Goals, changing the lives of billions," said Hugh Evans, the CEO of The Global Poverty Project. "I have never been more proud to be a part of the Global Citizen movement!”
The event will be live-streamed, showcasing world leaders, musicians and activists responding with their support to combat poverty, inequality and climate change throughout the world. The idea is to create a global movement making 2015 the year to end poverty; a powerful voice that the UN General Assembly in New York, consisting of 193 countries, will take into account when they announce the new Global Goals plan in September.
To get free tickets to the event attendees were encouraged to take action by signing up on globalcitizen.org and going through a series of action journeys including signing petitions, tweeting for awareness, or sending emails or making phone calls to encourage world leaders to build viable educational resources for women and help end illnesses such as polio.
As an added bonus for showing up early on the day you can enter for a chance to win VIP tickets, upgrades and artist meet and greets.
Both MSNBC and MSNBC.com will air the festival live from 3 to 10 pm ET and for all you YouTube junkies, you can tune into youtube.com/globalcitizen, powered by T-Mobile, from 4 to 10 pm EST. For those who won’t be close to a screen, you’ll be able to tune into the “Global Citizen Radio” digital station on iHeartRadio and TIDAL.
Bollywood hero Hrithik Roshan and musical maestro A. R. Rahman will be hitting the radio airwaves joining the movement via Radio Everyone as part of the global campaign’s aim to reach 7 billion people in seven days. Radio Everyone is set to launch on September 26 at the 2015 Global Citizen Festival.
