An Indian woman faces a 14-year jail term after killing a child.
Kinjal Patel, 29, faces a long-term jail sentence of 14 years after she was found guilty for the death of a child who was in her care while she was babysitting. Patel pleaded under the Alford doctrine, where a defendant doesn't admit to being guilty of a crime but admits that there is enough evidence to convict him or her of a trial.
It was in January 2014 that Patel was found guilty of the murder of 19-month-old Athiyan Sivakumar, who died after sustaining fatal wounds. The child died of injuries caused by blunt force and passed away three days after the physical assault.
Superior Court Judge Patrick J. Clifford will impose a 20-year sentence in October of this year and will suspend it after Patel serves her 14-year jail term. Patel will also be required to serve a five-year probation. Patel's attorney, Kevin Smith, said that since she is not a US citizen, she will be deported to India after she completes her sentence.
What makes this situation even more tragic is that the child's parents also face charges in the case. Sivakumar Mani, 35, the child's father, and Thenmozhi Rajendran, 26, his mother, have been charged with risk of injury to a child and with interfering with an officer. They were charged because they allegedly lied to detectives about what happened the night their boy was injured.
While there are many more detailed parts to the story of dear Athiyan's death, the issue of child abuse is, unfortunately, all too common today. Many children lose their lives and are caused great harm daily at the hands of trusted and well-known caregivers.
Kinjal's attack on Athiyan resulted in his tragic death, but many children face terrifying conditions of abuse all over the world — some of which have been caught on camera and have ignited international news headlines and angry citizens globally.
Past Child Abuse Cases That Caused an Uproar
Many such terrifying incidents have been bravely caught on camera via secret recordings and footage of caregivers abusing children. Incidents that have gone viral online can cause a huge uproar over the moral code of parenting.
A Malaysian mother was jailed for 18 months for the brutal treatment of her child.
In 2012, a video went viral online that showed a young Malaysian mother brutally beating her eight-month-old baby repeatedly in the head after the child desperately reached out to the mother for comfort. The mother was sentenced to jail for 18 months and the child was placed into a foster family and has since been doing very well.

"Baby yoga" faces reactions of anger and dismay at alleged child abuse.
Facebook recently came under fire for allowing the homemade video of a child being dunked into a bucket of water to make its way into users' public feeds. While Facebook claims that the act was something called "baby yoga," many people argued that the child was distressed and crying and that, therefore, the act was inappropriate and child abuse.

A mother beats a child on a public street.
In a secret video recording, a stranger filmed a mother's horrifying attack on her child on a public street in China. While the child appeared to be well behaved, the attack was surprising and left many pedestrians in shock as well.

Kinjal's case is no different from these past accounts of child abuse. It seems that pain and harm can be caused by loved ones who are unfit to care for children.
