As the world mourns the untimely and tragic death of Glee actor Cory Monteith, speculations run high as to the possibility of his drug addiction being the main cause of his death. Substance abuse issues are known to start at a very young age, right from high schools.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released an alarming statistic of teenager(aged 15-19) deaths resulting from drug overdose increasing upto 90% from 2000 to 2009.
A young death caused by drug overdose is every parent’s nightmare. Crucial it is then for you mothers, fathers and guardians out there to know and understand this specific drug-language to be able to catch and put a stop to dangerous activities before it is too late. With the help of WebMD, we list here the most common drugs available, and the different names your child may be using for these.
GOOD TO KNOW
Antifreeze – the slang name given to Heroin – also knows as brown sugar, dope, Big H, skag, sweet dreams, train and tar.
Crank – stimulates senses, also knows as meth(most commonly), chalk, white cross, speed, fire, glass and ice (crystal methamphetamine). It can be taken as a pill, snorted or injected.
Crunk – the condition when you are drunk and high at the same time.
Roofies – our readers will remember this from the Hangover movies. Commonly called the date rape drug, it is also known as forget pill, roachies, roofenol, roche(roe-shay), Mexican valium.
Snow – as the name suggests, it stands for Cocaine. Teenage girls dealing with body image issues are more likely to use cocaine to avoid a weight issue, as being a stimulant it leads to a loss in appetite. Other names used are crack, coke, nose candy, dust, flake, Charlie, powder, snowbirds, white, and yahoo.
Special K – also known as vitamin K, cat valium, breakfast cereal, K, Ket, super acid, new ecstacy – it is normally used as an anesthetic.
X – used for Ecstasy (scientific term – 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)). Also known as bean, essence, lovers sped, stacy, XTC, Adam.
OVER-THE COUNTER MEDICATION
COUGH/COLD MEDICINE USERS – this has been a common trend lately, for teenagers to get high on large doses of a regular cough medicine, which in prescribed doses causes drowsiness at the most. Dextromethorphan(DXM) is the ingredient in cough syrups that becomes a hallucinogen with a dose over 900 milligrams. Slang words for this ingredient include:
Candy Dex DM Drex Red Devils Robo |
Rojo Skittles Tussin (most commonly used) Velvet Poor Man's X Vitamin D |
Syrup Head then is someone who uses DXM/cough syrups, and dexing is overdosing on cough syrups on purpose(also called robotripping/robodosing)
DRUGS CREATED BY TEENAGERS
Cheese – a very dangerous mixture of Tylenol PM(or other diphenhydramine containing medication) and black tar heroin. The final product looks like grated parmesan cheese. So poisonous it is that it lead to 20 teen deaths in Dallas in 2005 alone.
Candy Flipping – made by combining LSD with ecstacy. WebMD quotes a study conducted by the Caron Treatment Centers that determined 1 in 10 messages on Internet had teenagers asking for advice on how to take illegal drugs.
