Singer/Songwriter
This U.K. sensation has been called the “Princess of Bhangra”, the “First Lady of Bhangra” and the “Asian Madonna”. In other words, Mona Singh dominates the bhangra scene worldwide. She is one of the most popular artists of this generation, with a sound that is authentically reminiscent of Punjab. Singh has three successful albums—The Beginning, The Second Chapter and Stronger—under her belt. All were joint collaborations with her father, the legendary Channi Singh of the U.K. bhangra band Alaap. The duo composed, arranged and produced the albums, which went on to top the U.K. Asian music charts. Her first duet, “Saadi Marzi,” with famous bhangra singer Labh Janjua (of “Jee Karda” fame from the 2008 hit Singh is Kinng) is a peppy Punjabi tune sure to set your feet tapping.
In June 2001, Singh received the award for Best Female Debutante Singer at the Lashkara Music Awards in New Delhi. She happened to be the only U.K. female artist also nominated in that category. In November 2003, Singh worked with dance producers Basement Jaxx and British rapper Dizzie Rascal on a track titled “Lucky Star.” That song made it to the U.K. Top 20 charts and the Singh was invited to perform the song live on BBC’s Top of the Pops.
Throughout her career, Singh has collected many prestigious awards, including the Young Achiever Award from the Mayor of London and Best Female Artist at the U.K. Bhangra Music Awards. This April, Singh’s second single from her new album will be out, with the full album to be released later in 2011. Bollywood is knocking on her door and you can also catch her voice in a playback track for the Bollywood comedy film Mr. Bhatti On Chutti, starring Anupam Kher and Amitabh Bachchan. And if she wasn’t busy enough, Singh’s melodious voice will also be featured on the tracks of a Punjabi film called Apna Desh and the British-Asian film, A Distant Mirage.
