Marc Anthony – Hairstylist Extraordinaire

Tips from a pro on getting your strands ready for spring, including his favourite look this season.

You’ve seen his work on the hottest red carpets and his products on shelves everywhere. He was the youngest person to win the title of World Champion Hair Stylist at 19 years old. Toronto-based celebrity hairstylist Marc Anthony is one of the leading names in the industry. He has also developed his own line of professional hair care products that are sold across the globe and has styled a long list of A-listers for television, film festivals and even the Oscars and the Grammys.

Soriyya Bawa: How did your career in hairstyling start? Was it something you always had a passion for?

Marc Anthony: I come from a family of hairdressers but it was never my original intention to become part of the industry. I had other plans, but sometimes life steers you in the direction you need to go in without letting you know. My father passed away when I was quite young and I stepped in “temporarily” to help out my mother. I was named World Champion Hair Stylist at the age of 19 and at that point decided that, not only was hair my passion, but that I would become the best I could be at my chosen field. So far it has been an amazing journey and I always look forward to new adventures.

SB: When it comes to styling, where do you find your inspiration?

MA: There are so many things; it would be impossible to list them. It has been anything from international runways to my children. I never question where the inspiration comes from; I just tap into it and let it move through me.

SB: What are some of your tips for recovering hair from the harsh winter weather?

MA: It’s the dryness that does the most damage when it comes to cold winters. The secret is to keep hair moisturized and conditioned. If you can do that, you will have a much easier time styling your hair and the added bonus is it will move into warmer weather with shine and health. I like to use our Oil of Morocco Shampoo, Conditioner and Argan Oil Treatment in the dryer months since the argan oil is really great for hydration.

SB: What are some ways that people can easily update their look for a new season?

MA: I’m actually enjoying the new polished finish; hair is still natural looking but a little more posh. We’ve taken longer layers and blown them out to make hair look shinier and more sophisticated than the last couple of seasons. It’s fun to see women dress up again.

SB: What’s your favourite hair trend for this spring season?

MA: The blowout. It adds something to a woman’s overall look that you just don’t get when you leave hair natural.

SB: What’s your least favourite hair trend this season?

MA: As we create our own trends each season we are always happy with them. That said, I am less a fan of overly messy hair at the moment. I’m enjoying the extra polish that is going on with hair right now.

SB: Who’s been your favourite celebrity to work with so far?

MA: That’s a difficult one. One moment that does stand out is my time with Coldplay. I am a big fan of their music so I had a wow-this-is-cool moment that day. They are seriously some of the funniest guys in the industry.

SB: When you’re in the salon, what’s your go-to product?

MA: Each client, no matter where I’m working, has specific hair needs. That said, I am a massive fan of our Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Treatment and use it on all hair types. I also love our Oil of Morocco Volumizing Mousse right now; again for all hair types — curly, wavy or straight.
