India’s Daughter: The Aftermath

Anarchy Or Justice?

With being one of the world’s biggest democracies comes the responsibility of handling varied opinions and thought processes that often collide and create a harrowing ripple effect throughout India. The most recent example of this effect is the backlash to the words and suggestions of the 2012 convicted rapist Mukesh Singh, who was interviewed in the controversial documentary India's Daughter. The piece went ahead of its Sunday release date and instead aired Wednesday on BBC but remains banned in India.

The statement uttered in the documentary “a girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy,” along with Singh’s suggestion that the 23-year-old rape victim might have survived if she had not fought back, were the very reasons why the documentary was banned, meeting with widespread outrage. According to the BBC, police feared the interview’s offensive remarks towards women could cause an uncontrollable public outcry, leading the Delhi court to issue an injunction against the film and India requesting a global ban.

Danny Cohen, the BBC’s director of television, responded to India’s concern in a letter, writing, “We feel India’s Daughter has a strong public interest in raising awareness of a global problem and the BBC is satisfied with the editorial standards of the film.”

Filmmaker Leslee Udwin also stands by her production, stating that the documentary "was a powerful tool for change." But as the Delhi police feared, the film, which was available on YouTube until today, has spurred instant reactions — and not just the verbal kind.

A day after the airing, Syed Farid Khano, a 35-year-old alleged rapist convicted for attacks on a 20-year-old in February, according to NDTV was taken to justice by the public. An angry mob stormed the jail in Nagaland on Thursday and took justice into their own hands by stripping him, beating him and eventually hanging him to death while onlookers took pictures and videos of the horrific ordeal.

While the public claims that this execution is justice, authorities in India fear that the uproar will create severe unrest in the country. Do you feel that this reaction was necessary in order to get a point across to rapists or that it's simply anarchy in the making?
