I Am Sikh, Help Me Roar!
This was the slogan for The Singh Project exhibition, the brain child of photographers Amit and Naroop at the Framers Gallery W1 which celebrates the turban and the beard.
The Singh Project, a new photo exhibition which features 35 original portraits focusing on the pertinent symbolism of the ubiquitous symbols of Sikhism 'the beard and the turban,' has hit international recognition.
Each image showcased is unique to the individuals highlighted in the exhibit. The sikh men chosen came from all walks of life which included doctors, boxers, a temple volunteer, magicians, and I.T. professionals.
The exhibit's main focus is to showcase brilliant images that incorporate fashion, faith and style manifested in Britain’s modern and multicultural heritage.
The Singh Project , now on the international map, has raised £10,000 through Kickstarter, the crowd sourcing website. Added to the clout of the exhibition, the image of Ishtmeet Singh Phull took third place in the Prix de la Photographie Paris Competition in 2013 for its originality and composition.
Amit and Naroop’s photography repertoire includes capturing celebrities such as 50 cents and Ricky Gervais. The duo has also partaken in advertising campaigns for MTV, Sunsilk, and Hauwei. In addition to their success, they also have a philanthropic side, focusing on charities such as Teenage Cancer Trust where they have hosted a master class for aspiring young photographers.
The guests of the exhibition included Bend it Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha, singer Jay Sean, music producer Talvin Singh, actors, Martin Delaney, Rez Kempton, Goldy Notay, Ameet Channa, Valmike Rampersad, presenters, Seema Pathan, Hardeep Singh Kohli and Sunny and Shay.
The Singh project took a year to complete and according to the duo Amit and Narrop, “As Sikh photographers, we were looking to do a project that reflected our culture and heritage. However, we wanted the project to be unique and universal, something that people from any background would find interesting and which stylistically reflected our British upbringing. Early 2013, working in the trendy parts of London, Shoreditch, Dalston, Camden etc, we started to notice the rise in the popularity of the beard among young British men. Then we began seeing fashion campaigns featuring models with beards down to their chests. This is when we really started to take notice. It was obvious these men and the fashion brands were trying to make a statement, a statement about identity and individualism. The beard was being used as a symbol to stand out from the crowd. Within Sikhism, the beard is also used as a symbol of identity, of being unique. So we came up with an idea. Why don’t we photograph British Sikh men and show how Sikh men have been wearing beards for centuries, but for them it isn’t a fashion or fad, it’s a key part of their faith. Of equal importance obviously is the turban. So our project expanded to exploring the diverse ways the beard and turban were worn by British Sikh men.”
