SUN, OCT 26 – PADWA
Diwali is also known as the festival of lights, is an annual Hindu festival celebrated during the fall season. It is the time when good triumphs over evil, knowledge over ignorance, light over darkness: the day when Lord Rama returned home to Ayodhya after his victory in Lanka.
Each day leading up towards the grand finale is celebrated with a special theme.
The second day of Diwali also known as Choti Diwali (small Diwali) and Narak Chaturdasi will be celebrated with the creation of the colourful and vibrant rangoli (a beautiful pattern made from rice flour, colours, and water) to observe the visit of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. There will also be pujas (prayers) and henna (mehandi) designs on women’s hands.
On the third day (Diwali) there will be Lakshmi Pooja, which will be the central event during the day. It is the time when the diyas and candles are lit to start the celebrations. After the Pooja, Diwali is usually celebrated with firecrackers.
On the fourth Day (Padwa) – this day is also observed as Annakoot meaning mountain of food; cook 56 types of food for the bhog (the offering of food) to Lord Krishna.
DiwaliFest set to begin October 24 will showcase events such as 'Dance, Delight, and Dhamaka' (explosion), a dance competition with the excitement of a dance reality TV show, showcasing South Asia’s vibrant culture.
Dance schools and studios from the South Asian community will be invited to participate and the winning team will be selected by a panel of celebrity judging panel, social media, and online voting with the sponsored wi-fi zone. Winners will receive a cash prize and a special souvenir.
Said to be emblematic of good luck, the community will be invited to come together to create a rangoli while stage dance performances will comprise of Giddha, Bhangra, Bharata Natyam, Raas and Bollywood.
No South Asian festival can be complete without its variety of food. An array of delicious cuisines and a colourful fashion show featuring traditional South Asian costumes and dresses by local Indo-Canadian designers will also be part of the three day festival.
If it wasn't enough that the three day long family fun was FREE to attend, visitors will be gifted a complimentary souvenir in the shape of a lit diya- traditionally made from clay and used to light the rooms during Diwali.
This event is sure to be a colourful delight for all senses so make sure you save-the-date!
Along with the live performances, a dynamic dance competition, a glamorous fashion show, family friendly
activities, mascots, photo booth, free samples giveaways and a chance to win fabulous prizes from the festival's lucky draw, participants are also encouraged to help build a food mountain by donating non-perishable food items.
Don't forget to stop by the ANOKHI MEDIA booth to say hi to see what exciting things we have in store for you.
