Saying No Is Sometimes The Hardest Thing For Us To Do
Stress management is a process many of us take for granted. Trying to keep a happy and healthy environment, and not wanting to disappoint anyone, we sometimes agree to obligations and commitments we may not necessarily be able to manage in the long term. Elizabeth Grace Saunders is the founder of Real Life E, a time coaching and training company, she writes in The Huffington Post, “The success of your business and the maintenance of your sanity depends on consistently making tough choices aligned with your values.” Indeed, we are always faced with tough internal choices, as we try to discipline ourselves in balancing work, social, and familial commitments.
Here are some tips that will help in making productive decisions for a better work/life balance.
Accept That Not Every Situation Is In Your Control
When we are tied to our commitments, we do not have control over other people’s behavior, so we cannot guess or speculate how he or she will react if we say, “No.” However, in order to avoid further complications, we should stick to our gut feeling and try to address saying, “No,” in a way that is not negative or hurtful to the other person. HelpGuide suggests sharing your feelings, before making any decision, by communicating your dilemma and anxieties with close friends.
Value Your Time (And Others)
Don’t we all wish that we had more than 24 hours in a day so that we could do everything we want? Unfortunately, none of us have that luxury. We are compelled to value time – not just of others, but also, we should prioritize our obligations and commitments. Our time to work, relax, and manage stress should perhaps be the first thing on our minds. Leo Babauta of Life Hack advises, “Know your commitments, and how valuable your precious time is. Then, when someone asks you to dedicate some of your time to a new commitment, you’ll know that you simply cannot do it. And tell them that: “I just can’t right now, my plate is overloaded as it is.”
People Understand
There is no urgent need to be polite and please everyone. At the end of the day, the people who are the most closest to you will understand the value of your time. You can always respond to people’s questions with a simple, “I will get back to you,” or “maybe later,” so that they do not immediately feel rejected or left out because you are choosing at this moment not to spend time with them, but previous commitments. The more you practice saying no in different manners, you will see that you will not feel pressured, anxious, or stressed which will lead you to have a healthy and happy life!
