The 17th Asian Games Came To A Close After A 15-Day Run In Incheon, South Korea
India’s athletes managed to gain medals in new disciplines this year such as compound archery, sailing and women’s 20km walk. The country finished up with 57 medals: 11 gold, 10 silver, and 36 bronze bringing them to the eighth position, a little less than 2010 where they bagged the sixth spot with 14 gold medals, collecting 65 medals in all.
The Highlights
India won their first wrestling gold after 28 years, according to NDTV Sports. London Olympic Bronze Medalist Yogeshwar Dutt won the medal in men’s 65 kg freestyle.
Five time former world women’s boxing champion and mother of three, 31-year-old Mary Kom (recently the focus of a Bollywood biopic starring Priyanka Chopra) won the flyweight 48-51 kg title keeping India’s head high in the games.
Seema Punia won the goal in women’s discus, Bindra and Jitu Rai won their own respective medals in 10m air rifle (bronze) and 50m pistol (gold).
India also clinched a victory when it came to swimming, Sandeep Sejwal won the bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke.
Aishwarya Nedunchezhiyan, 17, and Varsha Gautam, 16, each won a bronze medal in sailing.
.
Finally, Archer Rajat Chauhan won the title for men’s compound team.

The Controversies
The Asian Games were not without controversy. There was a variety of accusations: favouritism, drug use, sexual harassment, theft, and problems with the officials. Controversy crowded South Korean daily newspaper headlines.
The ugliest controversy, according to DNA India, involves Indian lightweight boxer Laishram Sarita Devi. Devi went against South Korea’s Jina Park. Even though for the spectators, it was assumed that Devi had easily won the match, it was Park who was awarded the 3-0 win. As a result, Devi was left emotionally distraught, especially when the Indian Olympic Association refused to interfere and instead, forced her to pay a 500$ (USD) appeal fee (she borrowed the appeal money from her coach and a journalist). During the ceremony, Devi refused to take the bronze medal, and handed it over to Park- adding more fuel to the fire. The International Boxing Association (AIBA) was going to take disciplinary action against Devi, but she apologized and the case was withdrawn.

The China-South Korea badminton final, too, had an unfavorable outcome, as the Chinese team coach alleged that the Koreans had manipulated the wind flow of the stadium. Surprisingly, even the Japanese team coach joined in to make the same accusation, since the South Koreans won both matches. ??
The president of the Football Association of Thailand made an accusation that the referees were not supportive, and making errors during the South Korea-Thailand semi-final. He did not agree with the decision to award the penalty kick to South Korea (eventually leading to their victory) in the injury time during the first half of the game. He believed the penalty to be justified. Iranian wrestler Saeid Abdevali, was initially declared the winner against South Korea’s Jihyun Jung in the Greco-Roman wrestling semi-final. However, the South Korean officials protested and overturned the decision. It was Jung who went on to win the gold medal at the end.
