World’s Most Influential Cities

London ranked as the most influential city in the world.

Forbes recently came out with 'The World's Most Influential Cities in 2014' list, naming 12 cities worldwide that made the cut.

The cities were determined to be the most influential in the world by Joel Kotkin, urban geographer Ali Modarres, former Accenture analyst Aaron Renn and demographer Wendell Cox. Together the group separated 58 leading metropolitan areas into eight categories: the amount of foreign direct investment they have attracted; the concentration of corporate headquarters; how many particular business niches they dominate; air connectivity (ease of travel to other global cities); strength of producer services; financial services; technology and media power; and racial diversity.

Topping the list is London, beating competitors such as New York and Paris on a few different criteria. According to a study conducted, London has attracted more than double the amount of foreign direct investment deals than New York, which is ranked second on the list.

Gordon Innes, CEO of London & Partners, the mayor’s promotional company for the capital, said “London has many outstanding attributes that are recognised worldwide, including a deep pool of talent, superb access to markets and financial backing, and a well-earned reputation for innovation and creativity. I am proud that Forbes has recognized these strengths in this study, and we will continue to showcase London to the outside world, not only helping as many companies as possible to come to our city, but also creating new jobs and economic growth that will benefit both London and the U.K.”

New York took the second spot with Paris following behind in third, as the report stated that these cities are influential due to their long and vivid history, tradition and "inertia".

Numbers four, five and six are Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Dubai ranked seventh on the list, as it's the top spot in the world for air connectivity. There are non-stop flights at least three times a week to 93 percent of global cities outside of its home region, according to Forbes. Dubai also is the financial capital’s location and has a "business- friendly" climate, making it a favourite for companies that are interested in establishing a Middle Eastern presence. Forbes stated in the article: "As a crossroads of humanity, Dubai is unparalleled among global cities for its diversity: 86 percent of its residents are foreign-born."

Tied for eighth position are Beijing and Sydney, and tied for tenth are Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area and Toronto.

Though some were confused as to how Toronto had made the list, Forbes said that this study ranked the cities on their ambition and competitiveness. The magazine believes that Toronto is the tenth "most necessary" city in the world.
